List of Stolen Cards

I had 55 cards stolen from a display in my office on Christmas Eve last year. I had given up hope of ever seeing any of the cards again and was going to replace one of them only to find the exact card listed on EBay. The seller had a number of the cards and was able to work with me to get them back and give the detective in the case a description of the seller he got them from on Craigslist. He had purchased them at the end of March of this year. All in Suffolk County - Long Island, NY. The seller was looking for $600 at the time for a collection of baseball cards, but did not offer up any of the "big" cards like the Mantle or Ruth - they met in a Walmart parking lot in Farmingdale, NY.

I'm now feeling I might be able to get the community to help track down others.

Some of the cards I had gotten recently I had not put into my registry so don't have the cert numbers. The 1909 Jennings only has a pop of 2 graded 1 so that does kind of narrow it down on that card. The 1953 ones have pops over 200 so less help there, but if they turn up in a lot with the others maybe there is a chance.

Cards sold on EBay, but were not from the person who stole the cards - they were from the person who bought them from the person on Craigslist.

I'm no internet detective, but I imagine thru the CL post, you could track it back to the person's computer and voila, you have the culprit.

Unfortunately, Craigslist is not "friendly" with law enforcement. They make LE jump through hoops to track stuff down that has been listed on Craigslist. The best chance is to find a listing and notify law enforcement and they can do a buy to get thing item back and find the culprit.

Best of luck with finding your other cards. I'm from Suffolk and so are at least a half dozen other board members. Hopefully they see this post and keep an eye out for you.
    STAY HEALTHY!

I wish you the best that you get some more cards back.

Anyone selling a card they stole that has a cert number? Real genius.

Good luck. I was going to show some of my cards at my office. Now I am rethinking this.

When anyone posts an ad to CL, they send an email to the OP....that will lead to an email.

Emails from CL sellers are usually hidden, so they would have to get a email address from CL.

That's not what I meant. For example, I want to sell a XXX on CL. I post the ad. I have to give CL MY email, so they can send me a 'verify' email. CL should be able to at least provide the scammer/thief email.

Also, from the OP post, the first deal went down in a Walmart parking lot. There had to have been some back and forth between buyer and seller either thru email or text, right?

I don't think either CL or EBay are going to be overly helpful. All emails to the EBay fraud address went unanswered. Luckily the EBay seller was so cooperative and provided all information to the detective, he didn't have the old post from CL, but they communicated by phone and he had the phone number. LE is working to supoena the phone records and hoping it was the actual persons phone and not a stolen phone. I have a feeling that the person is not the sharpest tool in the tool-shed so with any luck they get him and he is sitting on a bunch of the cards still. The wheels of justice move slowly so it seems like it is going to be a long process.

Yeah, I doubt he even realized that the numbers were unique identifiers. One more reason I'm sticking to graded cards on all my sets and keeping my records current.

Everyone that comes to the office loves it though. I just wish I hadn't put in some of the more expensive cards like the Ruth.

    Awesome, thank you!
