Congrats!! The 81 OPC baseball set is a tough one. The well-centered Ryan is amazing.

thanks john...this one is very tough to find centered...i am particularly impressed by this 9 as it is virtually flawless(the centering on back has a slight tilt, but that just me being picky)...the vertical line to the right of his face is just a glare...this is one of those cards that i just cant see too many more warranting a high grade

Nice card. Maybe it's just the pic but it looks like a gray back to me. If so, I'd get it reholdered since it brings about a 5x premium as a gray back. Maybe Tom will chime in, he knows better than I.

Love this card, nice pick up!

It does look like the gray back version. It would be easier to tell with a scan though.
I would get it relabeled but whatever you do - DO NOT crack and resub.

ill try to get a better pic on here....im not too familiar with the gray back variations...i did however recently open a pack of 1981 opc and all of the cards have a yellowish tint to the backs...this one is definately different with a grayish back...what would the difference in value be?
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
There is only 1 gray back 9 and it sold for $600.

its funny i only saw a front scan of the card at the time of purchase....that would be absolutely awesome if this card is worth way more than what i paid for it!

    Nice score!

And unlike the little old lady, Martin Sports, of all sellers, certainly should have known better, LOL!

Fantastic score! Congratulations on a nice find. I am sure a Nolan Ryan master set collector would be in hot pursuit of a card like that.

In terms of the buy you are good on all levels.

First, you posted it and made no reference to the grey back and others did.

Second, it came from a card dealer so they are considered an expert and should know better and it is perfectly acceptable for their loss to be your gain.

Third, the profit was in a range of acceptability. It was only $500 so not the end of the world. I mean had it been a little higher we are entering the unfair zone.

i agree dpeck...had the seller sent me the wrong card by mistake, i would notify them and return it immediately...in this case, it's the exact card and cert number which was listed, and there was no scan of the back provided(if there was, it wouldnt have lasted any time on ebay!)
  • Gemyanks10Gemyanks10 Posts: 1,164 ✭✭✭
I wonder if anyone on here has contacted the seller yet to notify them of what happened.

ETA: Great card! Congrats on the score it's a beauty.

i cant see why anyone would contact the seller unless they are just trying to stir things up...it would be on me(but not my obligation) to contact them if i felt i should return the item.

i am super excited to own this card(even before noticing the gray back), and will probably just admire it for a while instead of flipping it for a quick profit! im fairly convinced i would be hard pressed to find another one this nice!

I was just making a joke about another thread, and wasn't trying to stir up trouble and sorry if I offended you. It's an amazing card and would be proud to own it. 1981 Topps and OPC are both super tough and to find one that nice, for that price, is incredible. Congrats all around man.

Growing up, I was and still am a huge Ryan fan. I still remember watching the infamous fight on cable tv at my grandmother's house LOL. I only see his cards appreciating in value as well, not only for what he's done on and off the field, but once he passes on (not to sound morbid). Your 81 OPC is my 1980 Topps once I find a truely nice one. I'm in the market, but the last couple that have popped (in a 10 grade), have been titled or off-center left to right. I want to snag one before it eventually doubles in price, but I want it to truely warrant the grade as yours does.

How do you know it's sheet cut?

They've repeatedly ignored my offers on a couple of Gretzky RCs. Never bought from Martin Sports, but not a big fan at this point.

If it wasn't it would be graded by PSA. Same with a lot of their Gretzky RCs and other OPC rookies that are graded by BGS or KSA. If you ask them if they are sheet cut, they will pretend they don't know what you are talking about or reply with a "Is there anything we can help you with?"

Posted in most or all of their listings...

***IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON BIDDING ON OR BUYING A GRADED CARD PLEASE READ PRIOR TO BIDDING***

Please note, if you are buying or bidding on a graded card, you are buying this card which is graded by this particular grading company shown in the scan and listed in the title. There is NO GURANTEE of this card crossing over or being graded by any other grading company. The fact that this card is assigned a grade by this grading company has no corrilation with any other grading company. Plain and simple, you are bidding on this item and that`s it. If you plan on attemping to crack this card out of it`s graded holder in an attempt to cross over to another grading company go ahead, but ...that has NOTHING to do with this transaction. Do what you want but don`t come back here for a refund if you plan on trying this afterwards. If you plan on attemping to do this and are aware of my terms and understand you are doing so 100% at YOUR RISK than no problem, happy bidding! Remember, there are many different grading companys all with their many different standards, but here you will get exactly what you bid on and it will be on it`s way within 24 hours of payment received and always packed safely & securely.

The spelling and grammar in that disclaimer and in the Orr description are awful.
  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭
That disclaimer is in all their auctions. I am willing to bet they always try PSA first?
