72 Topps Julius Erving

Yes, I’ve grabbed these recently, but I really think the Dr. J rook is a pretty under appreciated card. Arguably a top 10 player of all time, early 70s rookie, without a single PSA 10.
For comparison, there are:
125 Dr. J rookie 9 or 10s
499 Magic/Bird/Dr. J 9s or 10s
2400 Jordan rookies (yes this is the undisputed card, no doubt, but those pop numbers are huge when you look at them in comparison...)

Anywhere, here are mine, anyone else?

My pants are a mess. Thanks guys.

    Cert ending 470 is stellar!

FASC boxes...whaaaat? Does that mean the rest of the case is residing wrapped and stored elsewhere too?

Very cool guys...and totally agree that card is underpriced and under appreciated.

    Thanks for sharing.

<< <i>Awesome cards!! I'm in the market for a clean PSA 9 but for now must settle for (2) of these FASC boxes.

Love the sealed. I remember when daves was trying to push that sealed case for 100k on ebay.

Rip one and go for the first 10! image

Beautiful cards. Look at the ball in Doc's hands, it looks like he has one of those mini basketballs.

I was under the impression that all of these cards had the fish eye by his left elbow and was not penalized for that defect. Maybe it is indeed present on itzagoner's raw card and the PSA 9 in the newer holder and is just not as noticeable as the PSA 9 in the older holder. If it's not on every card, shouldn't those with the fish eye get a PD qualifier.

It is fairly prevalent but far from present on every card.

my ervings, pulled the SGC one from a wax pack, obtained a lot of 16 cheaply in the late 90's and decided to open a few. Also got a mint Jabbar and Maravich too image

This post made me think of the boxes I sold a while back.

Had some big name stars showing on the back including Dr. J.

Argh you should have gotten that Dr J graded, it would be a top 3 basketball pack if it existed.

    1. jmoran - that sgc one looks real good! looks to have a potential for a straight psa 9 (btm right corner might be a little soft?)

    2. crazylegs, remember your posts vividly when you sold that lot. amazing stuff, and glad it went to a good cause for your kids!

...and last night one closed for over 2 with probstein. Guess it's starting to get more attention?

Great looking J's. I will have one in my collection at some point. I'm a PSA guy, but the SGC with the black holders really make that card standout.

    Thanks,

One of my favorites. Of course the one that sold for 2K was because there was no print dot. Still a 1,500.00 card in my opinion.

I've always liked the dr. J rookie. I love the design of the set. One of the best 70's bball sets out there. Nice colors and love how the team name looks on each card.
Now that I think about it, I remember saying this same thing about this set a while back. I must really like it.

I have this card in a PSA 5, one of the first PSA cards I ever collected.

    Very nice 9's!

Dug this old post up that I had made.

Looks like this card is now in the $3500-$4000 range in a 9. Definitely up a lot and could even still be under appreciated since most big cards have gone up.

Was curious to look at the pop numbers since I put it in the first post.

In the 18 mos since my first post, the:

    1972 Dr. J pop has gone from 125 to 131 in a 9 or 10
    1980 Bird/Magic pop has gone from 499 to 530
1986 Jordan pop has gone from 2400 to 2620 (probably a bit inflated with crack and resubs)

Percentage wise stayed pretty close to the same.

I bet you are glad you already have your Dr J rookies when looking at those prices.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • Supply and Demand...Supply and Demand! The Erving 9s without the print dot almost always have rougher corners or edges. It is a trade off.
  • IMO those psa 9's look like 10's...awesome cards for sure. The waxbox is damn nice too, I saw that one sold for 6.5k but I swore Steve had one recently on their site for around 3.5k, unless I was dream!

The back centering on both are maybe 80/20 at best. The back centering is bruuutal on this card which I think is the main reason for no 10s yet.

    Still amazing looking cards...image
  • Does anyone really look at backs anymore other than the graders? Even big time auction houses don't show the backs on some extremely expensive cards. Sometimes.

    Erving 9

With the explosion in other major star rookie cards you knew this one was going to take off.

I wouldn't be shocked if this goes for 5k.

Tough back centering but that front is spectacular. I will take the over on a new record.

    Great info shu, thanks.

I really think many have forgotten how good Dr. J was. Is it possible since he is so low key and stays out of the limelight he has lost popularity? In the 70's and 80's we was always in the top 10 discussion but now he isn't even considered.

"I wouldn't be shocked if this goes for 5k. "

looks like there were 2 BINs that went today alone for 4K, 5K is definitely in the ballpark.

Looking back at this thread, I remember when the card rose to about $2.2K for a while I was thinking that was a big run up, and now I'm kicking myself for not buying them at that price!

BBCE had two ungraded 72 wax packs that I picked up recently, dare I rip them and go for the elusive nonexistent 10?

    Final Price
  • Stone193Stone193 Posts: 24,439 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Incredible prices!

I have one - but if graded? Maybe a 6.

I don't really collect Bkb so if I missed the boat, it would only be pride of ownership since I never sell anything.

Of interest - now - with even SLU's of Jordan.

I wanted one of Jordan's earliest SLUs - the 1988 - and last year I picked one up for $177.

    image

It just went to POP 23 (about 300 subs).

One sold last nite for $490 bucks and there's another up right now.

It was a POP 22 when I picked it up - so only 1 more was added. Scarce? Only time will tell.

Don't worry, they just adjusted the pop report so it would match his jersey number image

  • schapkoschapko Posts: 341 ✭✭
I pick up an 88 SLU PSA 10 late last year for about $180 and I think this is the most under valued Jordan card out there. Hopefully that pop stays LOW! Given what 90-92 Fleer PSA 10s are going for, this card should be a $1,000 card easy with a pop of only 23!
