1898A French 10 Centimes – earlier issue in transition year. Graded NGC 66RB.

Clean surfaces with proof-like luster. The only known certified specimen.

This early 1898 coin was struck under the Third Republic of France 1898-1921 10 Centime series, and is a Paris Mint issue. The 1898 is a better date compared to the common issues of the War but is not scarce. The design was also used on bronze one, two and five centimes of the Belle Époque. All the bronze ten centimes pieces were demonetized in 1935.

1898 French 10 Centimes – later issue in transition year, and the new design widely recognized as associated with the beginning of the French “Belle Époque”. Graded PCGS 66RD.

Matte-like surface with die polishing striations and satin luster.

Obverse: Draped Bust of Republic with Phrygian cap and olive branch, facing right; “REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE”. (“Republic of France.”)

Reverse: Armored and draped Republic, seated left on a rock with his right hand holding a flag-bearer and his left hand an olive branch on his right a child holding ears of wheat and a hammer, 10c below right and (date) below (“Republic protecting her child”); “LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE” (“Freedom, Equality, Fraternity.”)
