Grading Help with this S.Africa Zuid 2 1/2 Shillings

1895 South Africa Zuid Republic 2 1/2 Shillings KM#7

Krause has it: F=$48, VF=$255, XF=$725

Huge jumps, so wanted some opinions where this one falls.

  • Just my opinion, but I do not think this one makes VF, but then I have always found the Kruger coins hard to grade.

    I say VF based on general VF grading across all types. I am not knowledgable about this specific type but I would expect an F to have less detail. The rims and denticles (dots) look intact, not worn down or blurred together from wear. The ear and hair still have some details. The hair is definitely showing strong wear but it looks VF to me.

    edit: don't forget that rim ding on the reverse around 6 o'clock. That will affect the grade most certainly. For some reason I am drawing a blank as to whether it will prevent the coin from slabbing. Senior moment image
