Without really comparing the two, just casual observation:

Obv - the "Seam" on the slab in Heritage is between the B/E on the eBay coin, it's between the I/B

Rev - the bottom of the coin points up and to the right (towards the label) and on the eBay coin, points up and to the left, despite the Obverses being relatively the same exact orientation.

MM looks bogus on the ebay auction. It doesn't have the 16D look.

First off, holder is obviously bad. Slab, label are wrong. Second, the fake is missing several minor obverse toning spots found on the genuine Heritage piece. Lastly, the genuine Heritage piece has a slightly rotated reverse; the Asian fake on ebay does not.

    Reported.

LOL. That exact coin (pouch and all) walked into my shop this week. I had barely walked up to the counter when I deemed it counterfeit – pointed out everything that was wrong with it (font, weight, color of the label for the holder and the coin was even a worse forgery). I guess they didn't like what I had to say.

Edit: added a word that fixed a sentence.

Looks different because it's a fake.

    When in doubt, don't.

It looks like this seller sold the same coin for $6K on Oct 8th.....so either someone returned for a refund, didn't pay b/c they knew it was a fake, or perhaps shilled for the seller. This person could very well have bought this coin, assumed that it is authentic, and took a bath on it. Now, knowing that its a fake, just trying to recoup lost funds? Or he/she is just a criminal. According to the woman who came into my shop with this coin, she was selling it for her grandmother. Now she had to go tell grandma that it wasn't worth anything. The whole thing stank at the time but she was hot to get out of the shop and I wasn't 100% sure she was BSing me then. Now I'm sure. The geographic location of the seller and the close proximity in time leave me no doubt it is the same person.

So......no one has suggested to her that she needs to take it up with the seller she bought it from? I thought all sellers guarantee all coins they sell are authentic? I certainly would want to know who the original seller was and why they don't take it back. Are there any sellers on these boards like that? I suspect there are. hmmm

Yes, I did tell her to return it to Aliexpress or Alibaba, whichever one she bought it from.

I heard back from this seller that they cannot be sure that the auction at Heritage in 2007 was a real dime.
They believe that theirs is the real deal.....
Wish we had a Tru View on this one, sure would help....oh, well.

I did explain why the dime itself is a fake but did not go into why the slab was a fake as that might take weeks
to get a non believer to understand.

It is interesting to see ebay hasn't pulled the auction. It is over $1k at this point.

I asked him where it came from as Aliexpress would take a return....lol

    Here is his response:

The coin came from a storage locker auction and was locked in a cheap safe, tucked away in the back corner. I purchased the coin from the individual who won the storage locker. I took the coin to two reputable people (one a personal friend of mine, with 20+ years experience as a coin dealer). The only suspicion was that the coin (obverse specifically) didn't look like an AU-50 and might have been more appropriately graded as a 40-45. Neither party made any suggestions as to its authenticity, but one (my friend) commented that the case was a little "beat up". Again though, no comment to its authenticity.

I have no direct contact to the individual that I purchased it from and no way to directly trace him either. I have no sales receipt from him, or any proof that I purchased from him. It was a person-to-person cash deal. I'm only a novice coin collector, so my experience is limited.

Being the devil's advocate, maybe this is not a counterfeit coin, maybe it's an authentic AU-40 that someone was trying to pass off as an AU-50... I don't know. I'm in a tight spot.

Someone hand me a 10-foot pole.

Nah, don't bother. I still wouldn't touch this coin with the aforementioned stick.

Ditto. And anybody with 20+ years in the coin biz would immediately spot that POC as a fake. Sounds like the usual bobbing and weaving while letting the auction run its course.

Send him a link to this thread.

Reported, but most likely to no avail--Ebay has gotten very lax in taking down auctions lately.

Seller listened to the hard truth and took it down. Such a shame to get suckered into a ploy like he appears
    to have been taken.
