Finally picked one of these up after eyeballing it for the past 2 years

I know its probably not the best time to get one but then again, is there ever really a bad time? I have been watching this card go up and up within the last 2 years and have been telling myself that I was going to get one (along with the 68 Ryan express in an 8 but that is another that has risen A LOT within the past two years) and so I finally just had to grab the Jeter. I can see this card going into the $16-1,700.00 range within the next couple of years. This will be the baseball card equivalent to the Jordan 86 Fleer in a 9.

Sorry about the scan but it was taken with my iPhone because I just picked it up on the way to work so I haven't had a chance to scan it yet but I wanted to show this beauty off as I am pretty stoked on owning it.

EDIT: I was able to scan the card last night as well.

Very nice card and a great addition to your collection however I do not think it will have the staying power of the Jordan rookie card. While Jeter is similar to Jordan in many ways he just isn't in the GOAT discussion and for that reason I think this card will either slow down or reverse as Jeter steps further and further away from the game. If Jeter became an owner or MLB analyst that could change. Nolan Ryan's legend grew even more with his success in the front office at Texas and when he beat up Robin Ventura j/k. Most people could at least make a case that Nolan Ryan was the GOAT when it came to pitchers.

I agree that Jeter will not have the same staying power as Jordan with respect to their rookie cards. However, I don't really think a case could be made for Ryan being the GOAT. He had the strikeouts and no hitters, which is very impressive. But, was he ever really considered the best pitcher even of his generation? With guys like Seaver , Carlton, Gibson, Palmer and then guys like Clemens, not to mention coming on the heels of Sandy Koufax, it isn't even fair to bring him up with the likes of Mathewson, Johnson, Grove etc.

Congrats on a great pick up.

Jeter has and always will have the respect of the baseball community.

His SP has been rising over the years and really took off last year.

His card hype may slow down now and maybe reverse itself a tad....but now is a good time to buy

as I think it will hit $2K. Is he the Goat? no way. Jordan is considered the best ever by many many people.

Jeter isn't even the best shortstop and not even close to most cherished Yankee. I would take Ripken over Jeter any day of the week.

Is the Goat the best player??? Many feel Mays was better than Mantle. Is Mantle the Goat??

OH yeah!!!!!!!!!!!! same way with Ryan (my all time fav player). Best pitcher ever??? no way

Valid points but did any of those guys whip a charging player in less then 10 seconds? image

I doubt if any player was stupid enough to charge the mound when Johnson had the ball in his handimage

Nope. Ryan made him look just plain silly that day.

  • Thanks for the comments everyone. Overall I just really wanted to own the card in this grade even when it was at half the price of what they have become today and as I mentioned that maybe now wasn't the best time to purchase, but then again ...maybe its was? I don't think anyone here would disagree that owning this card would ever be considered a loss.

Great Card Marc, That's a particularly nice copy you purchased. I think Jeter will be thought of and collected in the very same way that Cal Ripken is collected. Both players, whether you were fans of the team they played for or not, are both some of the most highly respected baseball players of this generation.

I can't agree more with Matt.

I am a die hard Yankee fan for a long time.

I deeply respected Ripken on/off the field. As time goes on we remember who they were as much as what they did.

I have quite a few Ryan auto's...one is a nice 16X20 of the famous headlock shot and Ryan uppercut

I think that pic is more famous than Ali standing over Liston...lol

Congratulations on a great pick up. That card will be desirable for many years to come.
  • At least from that picture, that card looks like it could bump. Great pickup!

One thing going for the Jeter is how ridiculously difficult it is to get in high grade. That makes the "collectibility" higher to me than Ripken or some of the other rookie cards mentioned. That being said, that card is GORGEOUS! I bought one raw a few years back that ended up a 7 and I know how tough those babies are and that is a particularly great looking 9. Congrats!

That right there is perfectly said. Ripken has plenty of 10's and for a lot of people still, coughing up $1300 is still affordable. And the next best thing is a 9 which can be had at about $160.

Jeter on the other hand only has about 2 handfuls of 10's out there in existance. The fact that they are soooo expensive to the point that just about anyone would consider it an insane amount to spend on a single baseball card. The next best thing that a lot of people can still afford however are the 9's which will mean that they will remain in high demand for a VERY long time and in turn will just make the value go up. Solid investment I feel.
