What am I missing?

So I'm a complete noobie to grading but I had a bunch of old rookie cards laying around and decided to submit them to PSA. I was pretty happy with my submission with the exception of one card, a Patrick Roy rookie...

I know this card isn't a big money card, but I really thought it was a lot better than a 5, and now I'm kinda stumped.. The eye appeal is certainly higher than many of the other cards I submitted. I know the centering definitely hurts, but other than that the only thing I can think of is a few yellow imperfections in the surface... Would that be enough to bring it down to a 5? Most of the 5's I have seen pictures of have noticeably rounded corners..

On the other hand, maybe I'm just blind. Any feedback is appreciated!

Usually when a card that looks like that grades a 5 there is a small hard to see surface wrinkle/crease

That is not enough to lower it to a 5.

Generally speaking it would be as stated before a wrinkle or minor crease.

I just had a card come back a 5 and I assumed it was a wrinkle and went to look the card over under heavy light to see if I could find it and instead a found a faint gum stain that could only be seen when the card was tilted sideways and a slight angle. It was an OPC card too.

All I could do was just laugh that I missed it.

1986 OPC cards aren't known for surface wrinkles, and your copy doesn't appear to have any that I can see.

There does appear to be a surface bump on the top border. Depending on whether or not the bump can be seen on the back of the card might warrant a 5.

The only other issue that I can think of is that someone cleaned a wax stain off the back of the card and accidentally smudged or erased some of the print. Seven cards a pack makes for lots of wax stains.

  • Check the back for a very small crease/wrinkle also. It doesn't matter which side it is on, either will earn you a "5".

The top left corner looks a little touched and it appears a tad bit O/C L/R of which I don't see it being a 5. Are the two print dots (yellow in the red banner and the small dark spot center at the top of the card in the white border) on the card of the scanner? If they are, then maybe the grader just added it all up. IMO this card is much better than a 5.

PM me if you're interested in selling :-)
  • The top left corner isnt quite as strong as the others but its still looks quite sharp in person. The yellow on the red border is actually on the card. The ding on the top border doesn't seem to be visible from the back but I definitely missed that the first time around. There also seems to be a slight wax stain on the back with a scratch under it. Still no creases though.. From PSAs website it looks like this could have all added up to a 5. Prolly not worth a resubmit.

    Thanks for all the help!
