Hockey Junk Wax

I made a small purchase of hockey junk wax yesterday from D and A. I do this occasionally but this is the first time I actually thought about how much this product would have cost me back when it first came out. Here's the product I bought, what I paid for and what I remember it costing in Canada when it first came out

1990/91 Bowman Hockey Factory Set: $1.95 ($25 back then)
1990/91 Upper Deck English Hi # Hockey Hobby Box: $4.95 ($125 or more back then, at least briefly)
1991/92 7th Inning Sketch OHL Tomorrows Stars Today Hockey Hobby 20 Box Case: $28.95 ($600 back then)
1991/92 7th Inning Sketch WHL Tomorrows Stars Today Hockey Hobby 20 Box Case: $28.95 ($600 back then)

So this order which cost me about $150 would have cost me over 3k when the product first came out.

All I can say is Wow!

It's like boxes of 92TSC that I have that I paid around 55 bucks for - couldn't sell them - got stuck - and now? 5 bucks? If that?

Any time that I come across a decently priced box of 1990-91 Upper Deck French Hi#'s, I buy it. I used to find them all day for $10-15 but they seem to have dried up a bit.

Thats a true advantage,when the market/product bottom drops out,for the collector(not investor) and for just having boxes for a fun rip.

1990-91 Hockey would be right up there with the best hobby rookie classes in any sport if there was a truly limited hockey product released. OPC got greedy and screwed up the Premier product. There are so many Hall of Famers and borderline Hall of Famers in that year - Bure, Roenick, Fedorov, Belfour, Modano, Mogilny, Jagr, Owen Nolan, Sundin, Rob Blake, Brodeur, Neidermayer, etc. But the top card was Eric Lindros, I remember there was little controversy when Upper Deck included him in a team captain card even though Score had the exclusive rights. It set off a little frenzy when everyone thought that the card was going to be pulled.

I'm still looking for a 1990-91 OPC Premier case. I know they are out there.

Well said. I remember the Lindros buzz, the $300-400 Fedorov Young Guns card. I remember the warnings of counterfeit 1990-91 Score Lindros cards. Probably my all-time favorite year as a collector.

The last box of 1990-91 French Hi#s that I broke about a month back yielded the following: 4x Fedorov, 2x Bure, 1x Canada's Captains and 5x Potvin

At the right week in 1991, that was a $1200+ box break. Regardless of "value" today, that is hands down, my favorite box break.
