Someone really wants a 1988 Donruss Devon White PSA 10

Was going through the pop reports and came across this....

There have been 356 1988 Donruss Devon White cards submitted to PSA -- 0 PSa 10's, 1 PSA 9, 2 PSA 8's, and 353 PSA 7's.

To add a little perspective, there's only been 276 Barry Bonds cards, 116 Cal Ripkens, and 296 Nolan Ryans from the set submitted to PSA. I feel like we need to have a group rip, find a PSA 10 Devon White, and somehow get it to the guy that's submitting all of these.

At about 1800+ in fees let's hope so. That money woulda been better spent on LASIK, if not.

Based on what I can see for raw cards available, a PSA 10 might be impossible. L/R centering is off on almost every raw card.
  • So between Miklias post, and vintagefuns post, when I had purchased the 88 Donruss case, now stingray tells me it's impossible. image

The sad part is, I opened boxes and boxes of those 25 years ago, and I remember that Devon White was ALWAYS off center.

Same here. I didn't want to be the first one to admit to opening boxes and boxes of the stuff. image Of all the cards Sam's club could've
had in cases over the years why did it have to be 88 Donruss? Anyway I remember the Devon White card as being a tough one
    to find centered.

    Dennis,

Thanks for making me feel better.

Sadder still, is that Devon White is one of the singles I used to pull out with the "other" stars, to put in plastic sheets. I remember having a couple pages of his card, right alongside the Nelson Lirianos and Kevin Elsters and Mackey Sassers.

There are some random cards that have abnormally high pops like this, I think they were used as practice cards for new graders.

Sadly, I still open boxes of this stuff. And yeah, the Devon White is always bad.

In case anyone now goes hunting through boxes of 1988 Donruss, bear in mind I'm overpaying for the following in PSA10:

    Tony Gwynn BC-6
    Wade Boggs BC-7
    Mike Scott BC-12
    Wally Joyner BC-13
    Tim Raines BC-18
    George Bell BC-19
    Ruben Sierra BC-26

This is kind of where I'm at. I'm guessing that PSA wouldn't actually officially add "practice grades" to the pop report and I'm sure, as others have stated, that the White card is tough, but this screams more typo or technical problem than an actual representation of what's been submitted by paying customers. There are some brutal cards out there but to have a card that is equally brutal across PSA 8-10 grades just seems too unbelievable.
  • Wow hard figure that one out

I don't know...there's people out there who'd definitely submit many cards to try to get a 10 for their registry set.

Someone has submitted 205 1991 Topps Debut '90 Oscar Azocars.

And 165 Mel Stortlemyres from the same set.

It's key card, Frank Thomas, has had 230 copies submitted.

The next largest volume submission for this set: the checklist card.

Most other subjects have had 1-2 copies submitted.

Perusing COMC, it looks like there may have been a lot of these that were buybacks used for the 2001 Hawaii show. I'll have to check the POP to see if these are distinguished there.

ETA: Just checked the POP, the Hawaii trade show adds 539 more 8s of this card, none in any other grade.

I've got a case of '88 Donruss that I bought thinking it would be $2k in a decade. Would barely make 2000 yen at this point, but if Devon White is turning out to be the holy grail I"m holding out hope.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

    << <i>steve has a 1988 donruss wax case for $120.

i'm contemplating the purchase in light of this thread.

even if i "strike out" on the white, likely, it would still be fun to rip through 720 packs.

I though the same when I picked up 10 vending boxes of 86T BB cheap, after 7 my eyes started bleeding and I couldn't force myself to open any of the last 3.

I am challenging this board, Can you be the first person to find a raw Devon White and have it graded a psa 10? For the Psa 10, I will gladly pay the grading fees for you.
Work hard and you will succeed!!

This could be very costly if another 300 plus need to be sent in.

What is your max on the grading fees you will cover?

Only the PSA 10. If you get a 9 or lower that's on you.

Yikes. Seems like some tough odds on this one.

Good luck to anyone who takes you up on the offer.

Maybe EagleEyeKid will and can nail it on the first try.

PSA used to grade out a bunch of common cards to give away at shows/events as promotional material.

I'm guessing that is the case here -- people know Devon White, but it was a cheap card, so encapsulate a bunch to give away. It seems completely illogical that anyone would spend hundreds, much less thousands, on grading out that card.

There's also no evidence to suggest there's a closest Devon White collector who is grading out all his other cards, too.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Isn't the Devon White card one that PSA graded purely for a promotion of some kind? This is pretty cool to land the 10, but does this even have any real value? Congrats either way for the 1 of a kind.
