Thanks, But it was nothing. You can find that information HERE. All I did was copy it into an Excel spreadsheet and sorted it from highest to lowest. Then I did the ole' Cut & Paste, for your viewing pleasure.

Cool -- But why would someone request a set and then not list it? There are some oddball sets that obviously had to be requested by somebody.
  • carkimcarkim Posts: 1,166 ✭✭
    Vargha,

By my count there are 57 sets that no one has added their collection to.

Guess that partially explains why some of those '75 cards often sell for lofty prices.
  • mcastaldimcastaldi Posts: 1,227 ✭✭✭
David> I've noticed that as well and quite frankly, I find it unacceptable.

That means that someone requested the set be added - then BJ and team made the effort to add the set. Then noone even bothered to add the set.

I have a big problem thinking that BJ and staff took the time to add these sets - and doing so came at the expense of adding sets that people are waiting on to add their collections to. This is in addition to wasting BJ's time and effort.

maybe there should be a one month rule... if no one registers a set that set in that period of time it should be taken out of the registry. Ethan

Ethan> By then, it's too late. The time spent getting the set added has already been wasted and delayed those of us waiting in line for sets we're actually serious about.

One way I would propose to deal with this is - at the time you request a set be added, you provide TWO cert numbers for that set. When that set is added to the registry, you will automatically have the first set listed - containing of those two cards. From that point, you could edit your set at will - EXCEPT - you cannot delete your set for one month. You may delete all the cards from the set (and have a completion percentage of 0.0%), but the set itself must remain for that period of time. The idea is that by no longer being able to simply request a set and hide, it will make people actually think before they request a set.

If Carlos' count of 57 empty registry sets is correct, that's a ridiculous waste of BJ's time and registry resources which could have been devoted to more active set builders.

Oh, By the way...I was happy to see that my beloved 1974 Topps Baseball set is in the Top 15imageimage
  • It really is quite impressive when one considers that 50% (approx) of those set numbers represent collectors that are seriously attempting to commit the necessary resources to complete each respective set.

  • 1977 is down to 10. #1 is calling it quits. Oh well, I guess that leaves me as #1 image I have a feeling more casualties will occur in time for 77.....
  • Those are interesting numbers.... how about these from the same top sets?

with using the number of cards registered the 72 set would be the most 'popular' followed by the 61 and then 56.

    Kurt,

I'm betting that we're going to be seeing more of that in the upcoming months. The set registry is still in its relative infancy and in the rush to be included or be the best, a numer of folks jumped up to their necks and eventually have to alter their plans in order to survive for the long run.

For me, its been almost 18 months since I stopped buying 71's, 68's, 69's and 73's on eBay. I realized that I was spending more money than I was bringing in and that it couldn't last. I still have the cards from those years - but I haven't even listed them yet and won't until I'm ready to start tackling those sets.

And a good chunk of those have been added in the past 2 months. When I started building my 75 set in February, Castaldi was way ahead with about 30%, I think, and Frank Smith was around 20%. Every week they've been adding dozens of cards. There are about 6-8 really active sets on the 75 list, with others making occasional small additions. Still, as one of those in the middle of the pack, it's an interesting race to watch between the top two. Maybe they should add a race chart like they have for the baseball standings. But I really have to applaud Frank Smith for keeping his GPA so high (.30 above the best possible) at the 50% mark. It should be a really remarkable set when it's done.

I think that it would be interesting to see which sets have attracted people to complete them, or close to it, let's say 90% or better. It doesn't really mean much if somene has registered three cards in a 660 card set.

I agree with you having 50+ sets listed with no one registering a set is unacceptable. I think PSA should impliment a system where you have to supply them with two Cert. # from cards in your set before it it listed in the registry. Hopefully that will stop people from requeting sets to be listed and never registering a set. I can understand waiting a few weeks, but some of the sets have been listed for months with no one registering a set. There are even a few sets listed on the registry that there have only ever been a few cards graded from.
  • Brucemo,

I have tallied the number of sets with certain completion percentages last week in a thread titled useless interesting registry statistics. Here is the link.

    Registry completion stats

It gives the number of sets by year, completed at 10%, 50%, 90%, and 100%.

the largest number of 90% sets, with 9 each, were the 54, 55, and 56 Topps.

If all of the cards in the set exist only in 8, except for one 9, and you have the 9, wouldn't your set "average" better than the best possible, assuming that you have no other cards?

    Bruce/David:

What you said about GPA and the set not being complete is correct….for the most part. However, there is another factor to consider here, especially on the newer sets. The finest possible set ratings (FPSRs) have not been updated (at least on the newer sets) since they were placed on the registry. Although this won’t make much of a difference on the older sets, it will make a HUGE difference on the newer sets. At the time the newer sets were set up on the registry, there were comparatively very few commons of the sets graded. As the popularity of the registry has soared, the number of commons for sets from the 1970’s and 1980’s have also increased dramatically. These high-grade commons, which were not included in the FPSR, have allowed GPA’s to increase. I would not be surprised to see some set ratings exceed the FPSR if Collectors Universe does not update the numbers before October.

Bruce…do I remember correctly that you live in Seattle? I just moved to Edmonds and work in Ballard. I would love to talk to you sometime.
