59 bob Gibson psa 9

Sorry on my phone and can't link, but what do you guys make of the 59 Gibson psa 9 on ebay. Odd seller, sold a $7k killebrew rookie but nothing else card related and only some relatively cheap coins

This is a tough one. I question why the Killebrew scan is different from the Gibson and Campbell. Conversely, I like the fact that price includes Overnight shipping so you would know if something was amiss immediately. If you're really interested in the Gibson, I'd probe the seller, get a phone number and perhaps some references, and go from there.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • It looks good but I have seen 8.5's that have better corners. I dunno, I am usually always suspicious at people who post photos from an angle. Especially when you have an $8,200 card but you have photos that look like they were taken on a blackberry cell phone from 2008.

Don't want to sound like the proverbial cynic.

But, if a guy is selling a nice card like that. Why the poor scan?

I don't think I would ever bid on something like that.

I don't like the font of the cert number and placements... could just be the angle, but looks a lot like the fake mantle, etc font.

It is a counterfeit. Looking closer at the card and comparing it to the original sale on 11/10/11 the cert number is a different font with different spacing and the original is centered slightly more left as well a light print line which is now missing. Thank God they get font spacing wrong so often.

The Earl Campbell is also a fake. The centering is completely different than the original sold by memory lane in 2009. The new one is clearly centered higher if you look at both bottom corners.

That's why I agree with Stone 100% on this.

If you got a nice card and use such a terrible scan, I always pass. I question those auctions too often. If your card is nice, expensive, and for sale, use a good scan.

Just curious if anyone was able to scan the barcode. I'm hoping they don't figure out a way to make a valid bar code.

No way to contact the killebrew buyer right?
  • So I made an insane bid on the Gibson. Then within the hr, the auction ended from the sellers side.

I just got a message from the seller saying this. Keep in mind, this is an $8200 card...

"hi i saw you were the high bidder on my PSA 9 Bob Gibson rookie PSA 9 I ended the listing because somebody made me a privet offer via paypal but the person could'nt send the payment because there was a problem with his credit card. If u are still interested in the card LMK i can do $5500 Straight Paypal with free overnight Shipping LMK if interested thanks"

So for $5500, he says I can have it. What a swell guy. Makes me think now that the auction was NEVER going to finish as he would have ended it early and then written to a bidder that they can have it for a cheaper price. That way its not "documented" and he gets the card(s) of his hands.

That leaves me to wonder if the seller is manufacturing the fakes or if he got stuck with them and is trying to pawn them off to another unsuspecting buyer "Muggyman Style"
  • Just got this as a reply after "offering" $3000. I wanted to see how low he would go in order to get the fakes off his hands...

"I just received a few emails that the gibson card might not be a authentic PSA graded item. I was told to resend the card into PSA for re authentication and if its deemed to be auntheic I will let you know but I cant do $3000 i am firm on $5500 but before we discuss a deal any further I need to have the card resent into PSA to verify its authentic"

Not sure if there's any truth to that but at least he wont be selling them on eBay and hopefully a potential buyer may notice something in hand that we are unable to notice through his grainy photos.

You never know when someone is a patsy. I have gotten nice raw from coin dealers one offs, but expensive graded rookies do not compute at all.
