Question about BCCG cards

I have seen a bunch of these on eBay graded 10, but at prices significantly below PSA 10 prices. What's the dang deal? image

Please forgive if this has been answered ad nauseum; I'm still feeling my way around here...

They are way underpriced vs PSA due to public perception that the cards are way way overgraded, touched up, trimmed...ect

Not sure but their grading scale might be different....psa 10 is gem mint
    bccg 10 might be nmt-mt

The rule of thumb is stay away.

I feel like most others here that if a card belongs in a PSA case (hi grade card) it would already be there.

My take is that BCCG was created essentially to deceive uninformed buyers into thinking they were buying something that they were not. As mentioned, BCCG uses a "different" grading scale so that the same numerical grade that every other TPG uses doesn't have the same meaning with BCCG. Examples:

    BCCG 10 – "Mint" or Better = (PSA/SCG/BGS 8.5/9 to 10)
    BCCG 9 – "Near Mint" or Better = (PSA/SCG/BGS 7 to 8.5)
    BCCG 8 – "Excellent" or Better = (PSA/SCG/BGS 5 to 6.5)
    BCCG 7 – "Very Good" or Better = (PSA/SCG/BGS 3 to 4.5)
    BCCG 6 – "Good" or Better = (PSA/SCG/BGS 2 to 2.5)
    BCCG 5 – "Poor" or Better = (PSA/SCG/BGS 1 to 1.5)

While theoretically it says "or better" on every grade, if it were truly "or better" it would not be graded by BCCG. So you should assume in every case you are getting the lowest grade within BCCG's definition.

I've been very fortunate when I've crossed BCCG cards to PSA. I'm 4 for 4. Here's one example that I recently got back from PSA from a BCCG crack out. I paid a lot less for this BCCG and turned into a PSA 10. My gamble paid off.

BCCG cards are a joke.....sure, you can cross some over and get lucky, but for the most part, the people who pay a premium for BCCG cards are the lemmings that the scamsters look for. Ask yourself, if a Gem Mint 10 of any card goes for $500 and a BCCG 10 goes for $100, why would you send 1 it for BCCG grading??? The answer is because it has NO SHOT of a Gem Mint from any reputable grader.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • Yes PSA 10's sell for more - but to totally write off BCCG is not necessarily wise.

Many collectors see the Beckett name -- BCCG is significantly cheaper than BGS and compared to PSA you don't have to obtain a membership - so they send to BCCG. We have also been successful with crossovers from BCCG to PSA -- I am pretty sure I have seen the T-shirt that says "BUY the card not the HOLDER"

Nice card Bobby Not a bad player either.

My answer was intended primarily to a perceived newer card buyer asking a question a newbie would.

The Mccutchen example is from an experienced guy....and newer cards are most likely not trimmed or altered...

so a X over has a better chance than say a vintage card from the 60's.

The more experience one gets the greater the chance of picking a lower priced gem from the flock.

If you follow what you see you should be fine. Many of the great collectors on this board have said that you buy the card and not the holder. It is definitely possible to purchase a high quality example of a card in a BCCG holder or another less reputable company and cross it over successfully. Just make sure to examine the card closely and trust your judgement.

    I love BCCG cards.

IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED

  • Man, the responses are really outstanding. Can't thank you guys enough.

I am new to the grading aspect of the hobby, but I do like to think I have a good eye for cards in general. I definitely like the axiom "buy the card not the holder" - brilliant!

Again, thanks for the advice. This board rocks!

Oh, one more thing. When you crossover, do you send it in the holder or remove it first?

Remove it, if you want an unbiased opinion.
