2014 Libertad 7 Coin proof Set

Only 250 official sets worldwide by Banco de Mexico were available and after many delays are being delivered now. A set just sold on the bay for $1500 BIN and a second is in the bidding process at $915 (eBay item number:121456107787) with 1 day to go. The sets originally sold for $475.

The set contains those coins found in the 5 coin proof set plus a 2 oz and 5 oz proof Libertad. This is the first ever 7 coin proof by Banco de Mexico.

I don't think it's anything more than a packaging option. Why pay the premium?

The 2 & 5 ouncers are available individually as is the 5-piece set.

Agreed. Aren't these just onza? as in, bullion? I know that many folks collect them ... and many folks collect other forms of bullion like bars, etc. ... I just don't get the premium. In the end, the ultimate goal of every bullion collector must be to get a fair price per ounce. So premiums for packaging seems counter-intuitive. If there were a privy mark, then I could see the distinction. If there were a special engraving or a different design, I could reason it. But packaging ... that I don't get.

The Bank of Mexico does produce Libertads in bullion form just as the US Mint produces ASE's in bullion form but just as the US Mint produces Proof ASE's the Bank of Mexico produces Proof Libertads. The difference between the 2 mints is that proof Libertads are produced in extremely small numbers. The coins in this 2014 7 coin Libertad set are Proof quality. As to the premium the set originally sold for $475 when purchased from Choice Bullion back in June. Since hitting ebay my limited research shows sets have been going for between a low of $1030 to a high of $1500.

As a comparison the 2014 Proof W ASE from the US Mint website goes for $52.95. As there are 8.9 oz. in the Libertad set 8.9 x $52.95 = $471.25. so basically the premium is the same per oz.: $52.95 ASE vs $53.37 Libertad. And yet the US Mint makes hundreds of thousands of proof ASE's most years, the one noted exception being the 1995 W. In essence no one is doubling or even tripling their money on Proof ASE's whereas the 7 coin Libertad set has come out of the gate hauling butt. Don't know if it will maintain such momentum but it will be fun to watch.

I for one am very glad to have gotten in the ground floor paying such a high premium for a set.

So I was right. The premium has nothing to do with the packaging, and everything to do with the variety (in this case, a Proof strike).

I love proofs. I enjoy many NCLT. I totally understand the premium for low-mintage proof silver. Pruebas' comment had me thinking they were regular Libertads in a fancy box, hence my objection.

Yet evidently these proof Libertads ARE available separately, and at lower prices when summed.
I was not aware of these being offered as early as June; if so, good spot and pickup.
