Perez-Steele HOF postcard set

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to the message boards but not the industry. My dad opened a sportscard shop in 1986 and I've been an avid collector ever since.

My prized collection is a master set of all 15 series from Perez-Steele HOF postcards. Every card is from the same serial numbered set #9178.

Looking for the Ralph Kiner card that belongs in my set. When I sent it off to a show years ago, I received a different serial number back in return.

Once I get George Brett's autograph, I'm going to start the grading/authentication process. Have 83 postcards autographed!

These cards pop up on eBay quite a bit but I've never seen a master set. Do you think there is a premium for having all 15 series with the same serial number?

    Hiya Ben

    Welcome!

I don't understand how the card got "switched out" for another serial number? You said "sent off to a show...." Not sure what you mean? Just curious.

On the complete set - same serial number? I have to say - have no idea. Just wanted to say hi.

"Welcome to the Jungle". Go luck on the search for the Kiner. I guess there could always be some type of premium for having all the same serial numbers.

    Welcome Jack!

I'm guessing it was sent to a show promoter where Kiner was signing and got swapped with another signed Perez-Steele before being returned.
  • Other than just owning an awesome set I doubt there would be a premium for the same serial number. Although I'm sure you'll find many board members myself included that will tell that thst would just irk the hell outta me. I'd search for that Kiner to. I have 47 of those autographed and love everyone of them thinking of working on a way to display them. Was thinking of getting three more and mounting them I a frame somehow. They are great to look at in my opinion. Good Luck!

    Good guess Kyle.

I'm a poor reader - somehow instead of reading about 1 card, I was thinking the entire set was sent out. Quite a shame on the 1 card tho.

  • Welcome to the boards. I have a few of those cards. Like the set

You're exactly right Barry Larkin. I actually received the wrong serial numbered Stan Musial card back also but the show promoter was able to track down my card. Ralph Kiner is lost in cyberspace!

I have a daily search emailed to me from eBay with every Ralph Kiner autograph that hits the web so I'm confident I'll find it someday.
  • fwiw, the pezez steele postcard set was an issue of 10,000, issued in series. you bougt the first then you were entitled to buy the next and so on to the 15th. if you stopped buying you could no longer buy any later series. you could however transfer the rights to the new owner. the "master series" as you call it, or 15 complete series all with matching numbers,is not that rare. there are usually a couple sets per month on ebay.at the last Raleigh, NC show i saw 2 complete sets with matching numbers. hope this helps out.
  • note, with the autographs it's of course less common, i was just speaking of unsigned sets.
  • That's interesting you've seen master sets with no autographs. Wonder why they never obtained any or pursued them.

I feel bad for you. I'm clinically diagnosed OCD and having one card with a different serial number than all the others would haunt me to no end. It would be worth it to me to offer the signed Kiner plus a cash reward to get my Kiner. Best of luck to you!

Yes it does bug me that I don't have the card that belongs in my set. It's out there somewhere. I'm sure the eBay sellers are getting annoyed with me asking them everytime a signed Kiner card goes up for auction but that's the kind of persistence it's going to take!

Yaz was the last autograph I obtained in this set about 2 years ago. Sent it off to Dick Gordon Sports. It was spendy ($135) but worth it! Have a feeling George Brett may cost more.

Dick Gordon is Yaz's agent. He's running a public signing 11/15 where I'm finally going to get to meet Yaz! Auto tickets were only $60 if you're getting a trading card signed.
  • perez steele would sell individual postcards in the 1980s and 1990s to people who were still subscribing series by series. these were the cards that were left from people who quit buying their matching series. this is why you find so many autographed cards that don't have matching numbers. during the last few series subscribers were given the chance to buy extra series when they ordered their own. things i just thought of.

Have you joined Sportscollectors.net? I am wondering if that is a good way to try and track it down? The money that you'll save on private signings more than pays for the yearly $14.99 fee.
