So what is this really worth? A unique error on the Bay ...

In your opinion, is this worth $4,000 image

Also, they say it is unique, but I feel like one of our forumites posted a thread about a similar Israeli error in the past 8-12 months (possibly the same coin, I'm not sure).

edit: It's not mine, I don't know the seller, I am not in the market to buy or bid ... I am simply interested in sparking the age-old discussion of pricing and valuing darkside material AKA DARK MATTER!!!

Extremely cool error, but not even remotely $4K cool, to my way of thinking.

    Still, who knows...

PS- I wonder how this happened. Did/does Israel have a contract with the RCM to strike its coins? Or did a Canadian nickel stray VERY far from home before being overstruck?

PPS- CU member "desslok" seems to be our resident specialist in Israeli error coins. I found a link to his website, but it's in Hebrew.

this is very interesting. let him get what someone is willing to pay.
I recently sold 101 cent coin to a private ( very private) collector of Canadian error coins.
there is at this time only one coin like this know.
My coin is graded by CCCS as a MS62. However, I did not ask, nor get what this seller is asking for a foreign planchet coin.
we negotiated over a 2 year period and finally agreed on a price. from the beginning to the end of the negotiations we were ONLY $ 400 apart. ( all Canadian Dollars)
here is a image of it.

It's a neat coin. Asking price is probably high, but good luck finding another one if that is a type you really wanted!

YQQ, is that a loonie struck on a stuck 1 cent, or a 1 cent planchet? I can't see any evidence of a undertype. The font in the date looks kind of off to me. Here's a generic loonie of that year for comparison:

I know of desslok and have enjoyed his posts. Hopefully he will chime in here. The fonts on the Canada dates do raise an eyebrow.

I distinctly recall a thread in recent times (last 12 months?) about an Israeli coin struck on a Canada planchet. I tried searching the forum, but did not yield any result matching this description. But to answer Rob's query, if memory serves, the resolution was that Canada had in fact struck many coins for Israel in certain years. As they (and US, and Paris, and Heaton, etc. etc.) have done for many, many nations over the decades.

Here is one that sold for only $871 ... with brief explanation of Canada's history of striking Israeli coin

And here is the eBay item sale page, from 2013

    Hey guys,

Lochness, the links in your last post are actually to the sale of the very same coin that is now offered for $4500.

Error coin dealer Fred Weinberg purchased a large collection of Israeli off-metal strikes from the son of a late Tel Aviv mint employee who kept them hidden since the 80s. He slowly auctioned them off on eBay a few at a time with $1 start prices and let the market determine their price. I purchased some of them myself, but unfortunately with this specific piece I missed the auction and didn't notice it until it was over. It closed for $870 with 25 bids. The buyer immediately turned around and tried selling it for a start price of $4500, and he's been offering the same coin at the same price for almost a full year now, with no takers.

I have two Canada/Israel overstrike coins in my collection. One is a Canadian cent struck on a struck Israel 5 Agorot coin (small Aluminum-Bronze yellow planchet), with details of the underlying Israeli coin showing through:

The second one is exactly the opposite: an Israeli 10 Agorot coin overstruck on a struck Canadian 5-cent nickel coin, with details of the underlying Canadian coin showing through:

And also worth an honorable mention is the Israeli 10-Shekel coin struck on TWO bonded Canadian cent planchets:

I have a website for my collection of Israeli error coins. It's in Hebrew, but pictures of coins are pictures of coins in every language (a few of the titles are in English). If there's anything someone wants me to translate or explain I would be happy to do so.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like you don't agree on the $4,000 valuation either. I think we have a quorum!

I see now they are indeed the same coin. For some reason I thought the Weinberg coin was on a 10-cent CA planchet.

Thanks as always for your expert opinion on this matter image

Ah, okay. That's technically not a 101-cent coin then image AFAIK that would only refer to a $1 coin struck on top of an already struck 1 cent coin, not a blank intended for 1 cent coin. Still a very neat piece.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with the font. Although I suppose the metal flow on such an undersized planchet could do funny things like that.
