Thinking about collecting some Football....seeking advice

As a kid I never watched it and hardly know any of the players.

I've been getting more and more into watching football over the years and really am beginning to appreciate the strategic elements of the game.

With that said, I love 80s/early 90s product, but don't know of many players. I'm not really into modern product, but I'd like to collect a few active players.

A little vague, I know, but can anyone offer advice on direction?

Thanks in advance!

I have tried to start a football collection for several years and have eventually lost interest in adding more and more to it, so although I have some football representation in my collection, it is most just cards I like at this point and have either sold, traded or given away the ones I didn't! LOL!. I think you should spend some time browsing on a site like Ebay or Comc and figure out what player(s) interest you the most, which card releases look the most appealing and start there. Lots of players collectors only want cards of 1 or 2 players and they focus only on obtaining their cards! Since you mentioned the late 80s... I have some pack fresh cards from a box break of 1989 Score I did with another forum member a few years back. I have quite a few doubles left that I would be glad to offer. If you would be interested in them they would be cheap! image Good luck on whatever you decide.

    2 words: Andre Tippett.

Just kidding of course, but I do strongly recommend starting a player collection. Lots of good choices from 1980-95: Jerry rice, Walter Payton, Joe Montana, John elway, Barry sanders, emmitt smith. I always liked Curtis Martin. Might be interesting to do a defensive player. Singletary? Lott? Reggie white? Deion sanders?

Actually I collect Tippett myself. HOF'er. Chase primarily after base cards of his. I liked the guy back in the day. Other football guys I collect are Chris Doleman, John Randle, Deion Sanders and Derrick Thomas. Some I look for a little of everything, others I stick to base issues. Good value in football.

The joke I was making is that I'm known on these boards as a bit of a Tippett fiend, as you can see Here.

There are all kinds of players you could collect. For 80s/early 90s, there are many HOFers. For running backs (my favorite): Walter Payton (my #1), Barry Sanders, Emmit Smith, Curtis Martin, and many more. QBs: Favre, Marino, Elway, Montana, Aikman, just for starters. WRs: Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, Tim Brown, etc.

For active players, you could try well established guys who are likely going to the HOF. For QBs, it is pretty easy to find candidates: Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, etc. For RBs it gets a bit tougher. Adrian Peterson is just about forgettable at this point with the mess he's in. Steven Jackson is close to 11,000 yards although not sure if he's HOF material. There are some guys in their prime who are very good players, just don't have the HOF resume up to this point: Jamaal Charles and Marshawn Lynch are a couple of names that come to mind. There are many good WRs still active: Calvin Johnson, Reggie Wayne (current active career leader w/ over 13,000 yards), Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, and many more.

If you are watching a lot of football, I'm sure there are some players you admire, so perhaps collect cards of those guys.

For current players you could do worse than the 2 stars of last night's game, Andrew Luck and JJ Watt. Watt's performance was unbelievable!
