I've heard these are quite rare in high grades. They were apparently used and used and used.

    Nice coin!

I have a couple that were heavily used:

    image
Ethiopia Birr EE 1889 (AD 1897) Type I
    Emperor Menelik II

    image
Ethiopia Birr EE 1895 (AD 1903) Type II, slightly different design
Was mounted at one time (or suffered post-elephant damage, see below)

An Ethiopian Birr turns up in the 1950 MGM (Metro Goldwym Meyer) film "King Solomon's Mines"
as a medal worn by a native.

The film is based on H. Rider Haggard's novel about Africa and is set in 1897.

Alan Quatermain, a professional hunter, takes two clients, a brother and sister,
to search for the missing husband of the sister.

Stewart Granger plays the hunter and Deborah Kerr plays the sister.

Early in the film, Alan's African assistant is killed by an elephant.
Alan removes a decoration from the man's neck to give to his wife.
The decoration appears to be two silver dollar sized coins joined by a chain.

That is such a great coin. I have been looking for one for a few years and the majority (vast) of them are cleaned, worn, beat up, etc. I just picked one up a few weeks ago, but it does not even hold a candle to the OP's coin. Wow, again.

+1 this was going to be my post. Not a rare coin by type, but rare by condition. As rare as condition rarity can be. I have seen other MS examples but none that I could afford. This is really lovely though. The toning is what gets me. Just a great strike! Well done image

Dimitri goes for the best quality greek notes around, me and MEC2 are often happy with the VF - XF grade in the expensive greek notes category,
looking at your (greek) coins on your site, you and Dimitri are in the same league image
I'll guess your 200 pieces are from the 1978 - 1997 Drachma period.

About the modern Greek coins ......I have a well done almost complete set (all values high grades) of King Paul and love to build a 5 Drachma Set from king Otto to the last king Constantine B (1833-1973).......but it's a tough target for the RR pieces of King Otto in high grade condition.
Dimitri is a great experience collector , with huge knowledge and many times ask his help .......he helps many new collectors .

    Well alright! imageimage

Yes great posts and tons of archived posts ... if you have a question that isn't being answered today, search archives. Many great posts there from years past. They will not show up in today's pages but when you search, the info is still there alive and well. Many pictures still appear, too. My favorite library!
