1883 Shield Nickel - overdate?

BjornBjorn Posts: 538 ✭✭✭
I may be seeing something between the second 8 and the 3, but then again it may just be wishful thinking? Any opinions? I've thought about trying to remove some of the gunk in the devices to see if this helps make the date area clearer.

  • It is interesting looking as it looks like something could be there. Have you given the coin an acetone bath? If not that should remove some of the gunk in the devices.
  • look at these areas with a loupe or scope.

Does not look like any of the overdates to me.

  • Hey Cap do you see the 8 between the 8 and 3 or am I just wanting to see it I did place some arrows to show some places I saw anomalies. If not an over date could it have been a die issue ?

Don't see it. Maybe dies that had excessive use .

Doesn't match any of the known overdate dies.

    See my website for photos:

    1883/2 Shield Nickels

Jack Beymer once called these "clouds in the sky." In other words, you see what you want to see in the swirls of the metal. If there is actual raised metal, then we have something worth investigating.

P.S. Before I looked at your photo with arrows, I saw different clouds.

P.S.S. At least this is an 1883, not the &&** 1882 filled 2 that everyone wants to sell as if it were an 1883/2.

Thanks for the answers guys - I can definitely see the 'clouds' reference. I'll give it an acetone bath just in case, but if it doesn't match any known dies then I suspect it was just wishful thinking on my part....

I don't see anything between the 8 and the 3. Then again, maybe it's the adult beverages I had before dinner.

    Overdirt, maybe. image

Srsly, tho', I dunno. I don't see anything there, even with the help of the little blue arrows?

(Then again, spotting stuff like this is not my strong suit.)

Only possible evidence I see for an RPD is the little ear on the left top of the second 8. It's not much to go on. Would need to see the coin in person.
