3 oz Engelhard goes for $175/oz

Type of Bar supposedly has a population of <50

and a 10 T.oz'er goes for $40/oz

The collectors market for these "collectible" type of Engelhards is alive and well, off maybe a little, but relatively strong.
I threw what I thought was a stooopid money bid on the 3 oz'er, but apparently there's plenty others who are stooopider than me with their money image

Neat bars. Unfortunately, the market for esoteric bars is quite thin and eBay is the only venue that I can think of where you can sell them and get any premium. I remember when you tried to sell some rare 5 oz Engelhard bars to APMEX and their low ball offer was insulting. Have you ever tried to sell any rare bars such as these to any of your local coin/bullion dealers? Nothing wrong with paying a premium as long as you recognize that the market for these bars is quite thin and you may have a difficult time getting back the premium that you paid if you ever needed to sell them.

I have a few foster comstock lode ,handpoured one ouncers that some tried to tempt from my hands but now they sit in my silver shadowbox unloved(except by meimage

I see people trying to acquire a set of sorts of theses. The loafs are pretty cool and a three ouncer is a nice one to have.

I could see a dealer snatch these up for melt or + 2-3 at a B&M from the unknowing, uncaring or desperate and looking like good guys! With that said, there are really quite a bit of ten ouncers out there, they couldn't have gone further than someone's safe? People just holding coupled with a collective sence that there should be some special value attached is putting these on the sidelines.

My sceptical conspiracy sided mind makes be believe the could be knocked off in a heartbeat. When premiums get this high, what's to stop a counterfeiter from making an engelhard stamp. Gotta be easier than a coin to create, and even easier to pass off. How about a bored night shift CNC machinist punching in an engelhard logo online and poof! Poured bars with fake stamps gotta be pretty easy and I see damage happening someday. There are repop stock cartouche punches hitting the collectible rifle market as we speak. Just sayin.......

Quite the opposite actually. Since the birth of allengelhard.com, the attempting of selling fakes on eBay have diminished by nearly 100%. Therefore, anyone who does or is considering collecting these kind of bars should educate themself with the abundance of information available on the sight, and the owner(s) of the site are extremely receptive to answering questions and teaching what to look for.

As far as there being a limited exit strategy on these bars...as long as there's eBay, the premium will be met. These 2 bars are shining examples of what can be attained even in a spiraling downward market. I see 0 issue with being able to recapture the premium contingent on the bar being initially purchased with that in mind.

That site is provides a great blueprint on what to make. Engelhard is not the only hallmark out there that would be easy. Homestake? Come on!

Disagree. Not the least bit difficult. You just have to know the players and it's actually quite easy to sell them premium intact. It just won't be to a B & M.

I collect these types of bars intentionally as an alternative to items that are linked to the spot price of silver.

Could we get a list of "the players"? Thank you in advance.

No. There are six or seven players on these boards that I could name. If they feel like coming forward thats up to them. I wouldn't if I were them. There are other private collectors I have met over the years. I know it doesn't help you but that's why they are called private collectors.

However if you want a known dealer that knows the market Dave Nazzaro would be my first and second choice. He knows the market. There are others.

I dont do Ebay on the buy or sell side but that is the way to go for most.

You are correct that B & M's and some online venues are not the way to go.

For once, Justacommeman and I agree image

I don't claim to nearly be on the level of them, but I likes my "collectible" Engelhard silver bars image and it's no wonder I almost always lose to them on eBay auctions. Not deep enough pockets I suppose.
They can name themselves if they wish to do so because there are some on here.

rawteam1, it wasn't me. I own similar examples. IMO the price was about right. The 10 T.OZ example went for more than I anticipated.

Coming to this thread late I have little to add except that Mark (justacommeman) hit it out of the park.
