You see a pop 2 coin....your wife sees a new kitchen.

$30,000 has a different meaning to different people.

Probably why we will never see a lot of ladies as serious coin collectors, or men with really nice kitchens. image

Unfortunately (or fortunately), I am the kitchen guy and the coin guy in the family.

....all hypothetical of course, I do notice that my lady friend shakes her head in near disbelief at any coin above $2k or so.

She spends hours though watching the home improvement shows and the Beverly Hills mansions are a favorite subject.

    TDN has a nice kitchen.

Remember the large, framed pics of those awesome coins? They were a gift from his wife.

Speaking as a Tradesman that would be doing the upgrade I would cut every corner possible, buy the cheapest that Homey D has to offer and pass the savings on to the pop 2 coin.
    That's a compromise, right? image

You are looking at this all wrong. If you just think that the pop 2 coin costs $60,000, it all comes back into perspective. image

Tell her when she makes a Pop 1 or 2 coin worth 30k you'll think about redoing the kitchen..

I spent much more on my kitchen than I've ever spent on a coin. I also spend much more time in my kitchen than I've ever spent in a coin.

Unfortunately on our budget it's more like the 'Beverly Hillbillies' for us.

Buying a house seriously killed my coin budget. It's hard to justify coins when I still have 8 single pane windows from the 50s around.

I have three or four pop 1 coins and we got a new kitchen last year after the old floors rotted out and collapsed. However, in our broken-down mobile home, the cheap linoleum we put down after the renovation is already peeling up.

Not all top-pop coins and new kitchens are created equal. $30,000 would mean paying off my entire mortgage and having some left over to put towards the credit card bills. (I guess there are a few advantages to living in the country in a dumpy trailer.)

just came back from doing more work on my work-in-process new kitchen as well!!!

Heck, We did not replace my ceramic tile floor or frig or stove. We did buy a new sink, new over the stove microwave, new ceiling fan, new eating table, new rolling wood kitchen cart and lovely cherry solid wood cabinets with granite countertops. We were NOT going to get WHITE cabinets as it seems everyone else is doing these days!!

But it seemed everything else got replaced! Our budget is about $15K as it is not a huge kitchen. It is our first new kitchen since we bought our house 33 1/2 years ago.

The worst part of doing a kitchen is having to move your kitchen temporarily elsewhere!

My wife has been doing dishes in the bathroom or doing them outside in our sink which I put on the lawn next to my front step railing!

The good news is I found some old PCGS boxes I needed. Unfortunately, no coins found in them. LOL

  • Depends.
Is your pop one nicer than that pop two?

You can replace the kitchen and keep the wife.

Yikes - we put that much just into the appliances! No wonder the coin budget is shot! image

If you can afford a 30K coin, you can afford a 100K kitchen. Just MHO. Happy wife, happy life!

  • Before my medical problems I was a contractor/subcontractor and my specialty was decorative metal trim work for exteriors along with siding, window replacement, roofing, gutters and refacing kitchens and bathrooms. So for me redoing the kitchen is a lot less expensive. What kills my coin budget the most is feeding 4 big boys ages 11, 13, 15 and 17 our food bill is insane! When you fill up a side by side and good size deep freeze every week and see them empty mid week it just makes you stare in amazement. I forgot how much I ate when I was this age.....

If redoing a kitchen and not changing the floor plan you can save a lot of money refacing you cabinets if the main body is in good shape. you can cover exposed surfaces in real wood laminates and order new doors and drawer fronts. If you are handy you can do this yourself and save on the labor. You can go to many big box stores and they have free design consultation so use that service to design your kitchen. You can normally cut at least 10grand off a 30,000.00 kitchen by doing these things. There are even more things that can save money but not going to jack the thread any more than I did. Feel free to ask questions via PM if anyone has any. As to Steff (coins are fun) hers services are also very valuable and she would be able to show anyone remodeling where they can cut their costs especially if doing a full tear out with new floor plan.
