Prince of Wu

A bronze 5 cash, measuring close to 40 mm.
The ruler referenced on this coin was the founder of the Ming Dynasty.
At the time of the coin's cast, however, he was not yet emperor.
The coin shows his "reign title" at the time; Da Zhong. Da is the character at 12:00. Zhong is the character at 6:00.

    Amazing how much information can be gleaned from four simple characters. Thanks to our excellent historical records, no doubt.

    I often wonder what we are missing. That is, what sorts of things were NOT written and thus forgotten ages ago. But probably nothing related to coinage.
