Inscribed Autographed Baseball Cards

I have an opportunity to have some of my 1988 Topps Baseball cards autographed at the Long Island National on October 25th. Many of the autograph guests are willing to add a free inscription. Should I have inscriptions added to the autographs, or would an inscription ruin the appearance of the card? I am concerned that adding an inscription may result in an overall crowded and messy appearance.

I'm curious about this myself. I'm meeting Yaz (!!!) next month and he's willing to add a free inscription, either "TC 67" or "HOF 89." I was thinking of having him add TC 67 to the 69 Topps card I'm bringing, but I know that's unusual and most cards are just signed with a name.

That is awesome Dan. I am currently leaning away from any inscriptions. The few examples that I have found on Google Images simply do not give an appearance of being very typical to me. I think that I will regret it.

I think inscriptions may look OK on 8x10s, but not on regular size cards. JMO.

I'm leaning away from doing the inscription on the card. But they look good on baseballs too.

So Mikey, who are the autograph guests you're pursuing at that show?
  • When you have an item inscribed it takes it from plain jane to niche. Sometimes this is good, depending on what the inscription is, and sometimes this is not so good. For example, I have a baseball signed by Bob Feller that says I struck out Mickey Mantle. Great inscription. I also have a baseball signed by Pete Rose that says I broke up the Beatles. Crappy inscription. When I saw that he wrote that on my ball I asked for another one because he just did it without asking. I was told to move on by the promoter, but having him sign another one a year later and said to him, "Please no inscription." So yeah, just depends.

I am hoping to add Frank Viola, Phil Niekro, Andre Dawson and Kevin Mitchell to my very small collection of autographed 1988 Topps Baseball cards. I am also considering Mookie Wilson. I already have Tom Lasorda, Wade Boggs, Dwight Gooden and Bo Jackson. I am only attending on Saturday, so I will probably send in my Kevin Mitchell card. Hopefully more guests will be added that I will be interested in adding to my collection as well.

Andre Dawson was at the Legends Game in Cooperstown I went to in May, and I got my photo taken with him and my sons, but wasn't able to get an auto. There's a baseball dinner I go to in Manchester, NH, every November. Boggs was a guest 2 years ago and Gooden will be there next month. Looking forward to getting his auto.

Personally, I think have a unique inscription is awesome. Fergie Jenkins was signing at White Plains a few year ago. At first, I ask him to write: Be careful when you cross the Canadian boarder. He didn't get the joke, so I passed. Didn't you strike out Mantle at an AS game, I asked...and BAM

That autographed Ferguson Jenkins baseball card looks great Echo Canyon. Did he autograph it with a blue Sharpie? Sharpies typically appear much thicker. That is my biggest concern.

I think I'm the wrong guy to ask, but I believe ink works betters on a ball. And a sharpie on a card.

    I agree Echo Canyon.

Dan, personally I would go with Hof on the Yaz since the card itself is not from the 1967 season, just my opionion -Nathan

just depends on what you want

if you ever wanted or needed to sell them, personalizations to you will kill the value

unique inscriptions are always good, but since it's a card you gotta be a little careful with it - HOF or 3,000 hit, 500 HR types of inscriptions are always good

My thought is that if he had signed the card in 1969 he could have written TC 67, but wouldn't have known to write HOF 89. So getting the latter as the inscription dates the auto as being recent. Silly? Probably.

I feel the same way about inscriptions that refer to an accomplishment that occurred after the baseball card was issued. I will probably just have the baseball cards autographed without any inscriptions.
