Looking to buy my first vintage card..

Hey guys,

I usually take a gander at all of your vintage posts with Mantle, Yaz, Williams, etc.. and it has made me think about purchasing a few of my own... but with only one player in mind, Nellie Fox, my late father's favorite player. We both, die-hard White Sox fans. I often wore #2 playing baseball for my dad.

The cards of his I have the most interest in are Topps '56-'63. Instead of buying graded versions, I want to buy them raw and submit. Since I have only collected modern (Mattingly and Buehrle/just got his master set regsitry added), I have much to learn about what to look for. Creases, stains, soft corners, centering, etc.. Also, I have no idea what I should be paying for these cards, based on their conditionand expected grade. I am waiting to get back scans from other sellers for this card. I'd like to get this card in a 5-7 range, even though I can buy it in a PSA 8 but don't want to spend that money. I'd rather search and do it on my own. Because grading is everything, especiallywith vintage, I find that I want to ask for the back scan of any vintage card I'm considering purchasing.

I do like to follow the Dan Bessette theory of starting with a centered card and go from there. I have uploaded front and backs of two cards I may want to bid on. I see rolling, soft corners and the upper edge above his head is poor on the '60. Corners bent and creased on the '57 but looks better than the 1960? Can you let me know what you think it will grade and why? Thanks.

Just aded the '56. Looks te best to my eye but costs considerably more than the others.

I say a 3 on the 57, corners are rounded too much. Corners look sharper on the 60, but there is some paper loss on the bottom left and the top left looks like there is a crease on it?? Maybe 5.5 on that one.

Thanks for the props, but I'm actually not that much of a stickler for centering, not like some of the other guys on here. Good luck with your Nellie collection! I'm not confident enough to render an opinion on grades.

    .

My apologies. You would be correct. I was thinking of Matt (DM23HOF).

Haha no need to apologize! I love your mattingly website and look forward to your updates as you collect Nellie.

The 1960 sees to be somewhat out of focus. May just be the scan.

The 57 is a PSA 4 at best. Not sure because I can't see the crease well.

You might do well by following Greg Morris auctions on ebay. He does lots of raw set breaks and grades accurately. Buying a card he grades ExMt, you can be fairly assured you'll get at least a 5, and possibly a 6. I don't at all like the 1960 he has up right now though...graded as Ex-Exmt(No idea what that means...card looks Ex at best).

New England Sports cards has a really nice 1960 ExMt up at a BIN of $10. Bright color, in focus.

I like the All star one they have up too, although the centering on those is always difficult to figure out:
