Did the U.S. Mint doom the gold Kennedy to be a bullion coin even befor release?

Is there any other U.S. Commemorative that displays the bullion contents on the coin. It seems to be reserved for bullion items.

Edit: I just checked PCGS price guide and it isn't listed under modern gold commemorative or bullion, what is it?

Mint doesn't list it under commemoratives so that answers that. Never was a commemorative, I thought it was. I suppose PCGS will eventually list it under bullion.

What's the relevance of 1964 (1964-2014)? He was shot in 1963.

Legally this is not a commemorative

The commemoratives don't display content nor fineness

Since you are the first to bring this up now, I doubt pricing is based upon that.

  • It should and will be priced as bullion. Oh wait we already went over that...sorry
  • I wasn't thinking price as much as status. I was wrong thinking it was a commemorative. Still wondering what 1964 has to do with this coin.

The first Kennedy half was minted in 1964. Since he was assassinated in November, it was likely too late to actually strike the coins in 1963.

  • I can't believe I actually asked that question. I just realized your response, 50 years since the first year Kennedy half.

Actually everything about this thread is stupid. I should have know it wasn't a commemorative. Can I blame it on ebay ? When I search these I've been looking under modern gold commems.

The Kennedy is the US Mint product that has brought the Baseball HOF crowd back to reality. This is the real world of
Coins. The HOF was a dream world of universal appeal.

By the way - what has become of Cassie Mcfarland?

It's a 3/4 Oz. Gold slug that commemorates 50 years of making a little too never used coin.

I would like to have met her. I think she did a great job of conceptualization on the coins. I didn't buy any, but she did a great job.image

It's the same classification as the ATB Pucks, whatever that is. No rationale. No common sense. Just a coin that's been mislabeled by the Mint.

Actually 1964 to 2013 is 50 years of Kennedy half dollars, count the dates. 2014 is the 51st year/date that can be had for a collection. I could say more of what I've said 2 months ago, this is not a new revelation.
