Set Complete...After 40 Years!!

Yep, I started this 1961 Topps set around 1974.
by going to Mall or VFW shows, flea markets, an
occasional Kit Young catalog order, or wherever
I could find a card I didn't have.

I basically had no disposable income back then
so the condition of the set was always going to
be on the low to mid range side, but really the
condition of the set is all over the place.

I would sometimes go years without adding a
card to the set, and then get back into it again
for a while. It competed with other collecting
interests, and of course just life in general.

Anyway, it's done now, and below is the last
card I purchased for the set. It has already
been cracked out and placed in the album
with its 586 other little friends.

Very neat story. I love the way you stuck to it. I also like the album storage. My sets are in albums too.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Congrats on your determination. Some give up after a few years. To stick with it for 40 years is a great feat. That should make the set that much more enjoyable.
  • That's pretty awesome. You should scan some of the highlights from your set and share any interesting stories as you were trying to obtain certain cards.

    Best,
    Marc

Nice job. Rog looks nicely toasted on that card.

Congrats ! I thought it would take me that long to finish my 1967 bb set. I still have 15 other sets to finish. It very well could take me 40 years.

That's a great story, Congrats on the final card.
Gives me hope, I have been working on my 61 topps set for around ten years. I am down to 28 cards 21 high number I think so maybe I will go pull the set out and have a look at it this weekend.

    Thanks everyone.

This was the set that introduced a 10 year old
MisterBungle to the joys of opening nickel packs
    of baseball cards.

Although those cards are now long gone, it has
been a joy rebuilding those childhood memories.

Not sure where I'll go from here. I've already
been on an unopened side quest of putting
together PSA graded wax and cello packs from
1975-1989. That's done also. I may push the
    packs back prior to 1975.

I don't know, I may just wait until something
speaks to me. Right now I'm still psyched
by the fact that I can go through the album
one page at a time and there are no empty
pockets to fill. It's a pretty good feeling.

Thanks again for all the comments.

    John

Great story! Congratulations. I don't know how baseball set collectors do it. I think it's hard enough completing my 66 and 132 card basketball setsimage
