Please please please tell me that there were test issues and regular issues of this product? If not, I can honestly say that I threw thousands away just a couple of years ago.
The 1989 was the test issue for the 1990 set. Not much difference other than the copyright date and the player lineup in the set... for instance, Mark Grace was in the 1989 test issue but not the full-release 1990 issue. Which sucks, being my favorite player back in the day, I never was able to get my hands on one and have a hard time paying $150-$200 for one now.
Doesn't the 89 Griffey get bananas prices when it sells? I got my Greenwell for a song and was over the moon about it. One of the advantages of collecting an unpopular player.
I have the 1989 Ozzie Smith. It was very difficult to obtain. I had to do some negotiating.....with an Ozzie Smith collector. To this day, I don't how I pulled it off. The bottom line is that I had something that he wanted just as bad, so I made a deal with him. This was probably 4 or 5 years ago. I haven't seen another one since.

Yes the Griffey sells for big money if and one comes to auction..
in 1990, I remember seeing the 89's at a show selling for a premium. I got real excited because I knew my local shop had a couple boxes. I made a beeline to the shop and purchased the two boxes that he had. Then, I realized that there was a difference between the 1990 boxes I just purchased and the rarer 89's.
I think it does. I am fairly sure that any players that were in both sets look the same except for the date on the back. Ozzie was only in 1989. I was being honorary with Al.

<< <i>Hey, Al.... That looks EXACTLY like my Ozzie Smith. The resemblance is uncanny. >>
Looks like Ozzie needs a Kleenex.

I wonder how SCD is going to notate this newly discovered variation? "Booger" and "No Booger"?
