What was your best year as a sports fan?

Without question 1968 Detroit for this Tiger's fan.

Would take some thought to think of the second best year.

1988. College student in Nor Cal and I was a fan of all So Cal teams. Sitting around with my frat bros talking crap was the name of the game so it was a good year for me:

    - Dodgers beat the A's in the World Series. Kirk Gibson's shot heard round the world!
    - Lakers won the championship again.
    - UCLA football had Troy Aikman and was very good (I still remember the obliteration of Nebraska early in the season).
    - UCLA basketball had several future NBA players on the roster and were pretty good team though not great (Don McClean, Pooh, Trevor Wilson, Darrick Martin and Keith Owens).
    - Rams were tied for first with the 49ers though lost in first round of playoffs.
    - Gretzky became a King and all of a sudden hockey was relevant in LA (still remember going to a game at the Forum that season - most electric game I ever went to in LA).

IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED

It would have to be a three year span.

1974-A's win third consecutive World Series
    1975-Warriors win the NBA championship
1976-Raiders win the Super Bowl (technically it was in 1977, but it was the 1976 season)

Talk about a spoiled sports fan. Those three years ruined me for life! image

When my favorite team won the 1998 and 1999 Superbowls by beating the Packers and Falcons (of these two years 1998 was best because it was the first win and 1999 was second).

Third best year was 1978 when the Broncos beat the Raiders in the AFC Championship game played on 1-1-1978 to advance to Superbowl XII (we won't discuss the Superbowl cuz I am still upset about itimage)

Even though I'm a UGA alum.....1990/91 is hard to beat.

NCAA football. Was a student at Ga Tech and at every home game and the Citrus Bowl. Helped pull down the goalposts after the game.

And the Braves went to the world series that fall. Was a magical vibe in Atlanta that stretch.
  • 2006. That was my first (and only so far) to spring training to see the Cardinals. I met Adam Wainwright (my favorite player) and got to see them win the World Series. Such great memories from that year!

Being a Seattle fan, it's a pretty short list, so the 2013/14 NFL season is tops. The Seahawks squeaked by the Broncos in the SB, and the M's actually showed progress and almost made the playoffs without trading away talent we fans all covet. Next year will hopefully be even better for the M's!

Close second is probably 2001, enjoy the Mariners' season that came to a halt after 9/11

I'd love to say 1997 since my two favorite teams (Red Wings & U of M football) won their first titles in my lifetime that year. But I can barely acknowledge the Wings' Cup win that year because of the aftermath, which has forever cast a pall on that championship for me.

So I'll go with 1989 - Pistons and Michigan win basketball championships.

1998. On my exact 18th birthday (3/22/80) we got back at those Duke boys en route to our seventh championship (and by that point I already knew I wanted to go to Kentucky) and a little later as student manager I was on our 1998 HS baseball team that came just three outs short of the Sectional title (state final four)!

And to the OP, happy 30th anniversary to your magical 1984 Tigers squad! Be sure not to overlook those guys!

That was a spectacular season as well, albeit without the magic of being a kid.

My brother was a business acquaintance of Rocky Roe that year and we were able to score some remarkable seats from the good fellow.

And though your 2006 squad didn't bring home the top prize, they deserve a major tip of the Old English D as well considering just three years prior they had what, third most losses in MLB history?
