What will be Clayton Kershaw's registry rookie card?

Be curious what everyone's opinion is. He has cards as far back as 2005 Upper Deck USA but I would imagine that's out. He has a few cards across the Bowman spectrum in 2006 but his "mainstream" cards don't say "rookie card" ON them until 2008.

I'm not trying to debate the merits of this argument in this thread but after 4 ERA titles in a row, 3 Cy Youngs (after this one), a Triple Crown and very possibly an MVP, that puts you on the Hall of Fame radar. Is there any pitcher w/ 3 Cy's that's not in (or won't eventually be - with the exception of the steroid guys)? I couldn't think of any. Anyway...

So I'd like to figure out the probable registry card so I can get one signed. If I had a had a vote, I suppose I'd go with the 2008 Heritage or 2008 Ginter since they're clearly the most collected sets these days but I doubt anyone else would agree.

Listen, I don't like topps chrome, but isn't that always the answer among you HOF registry guys? I would think that would get the vote here.

Only if it's appropriate. I actually think the Heritage one is better. And I would be ok with 2008 Topps Updates as well but don't rookies typically come from regular issue sets and not updates/traded sets? I'm not an expert on how the cards are selected.

I like the Goudey and the Heritage myself.
52-90 All Sports, Mostly Topps, Mostly HOF, and some assorted wax.
  • They don't allow auto RCs or Bowman prospect cards, right? If that is the case, his best selling base RC from 2008 is the Bowman Sterling.

What's the print run on those? Is it over 999? That's the model football has been using.

Not limited-print or serial-numbered. None of his 2008 RCs are, except for Ultimate Collection, SP Authentic and Sweet Spot, which are all autos. As someone who regularly searches and purchases Kershaw RCs, the 2008 Bowman Sterling base RC is consistently the hardest to find and has the highest end prices. A close second would be the 2008 Topps Update, which is MUCH easier to find.

Why is McGwire's '85 Topps USA card universally recognized as a rookie card while Kershaw's USA rookie would not be?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

    Great question!
  • Technically speaking, it's because it was McGwire's first base card in a MLB licensed set. I generally accept any Kershaw card from 2005-2008 as a rookie card, but technically his only true RCs are 2008 base cards.

Gayle tells me the only way PSA will send out a poll is if someone tries to add one of his rookies to the a future HOF Rookie or All Time Dodgers set. Anyone willing? They don't offer those sets on the autographed side so I'm unable.

well this may not be a registry card--but boy is it SWEEEEEET !!!

got this in 2006. Attend the Cranston Show every year--longest running in the industry. Buy a box of Bowman Sterling every year--paid $235. Ripped the box in 2006--held onto this card since then. Just had it graded with my CC 15 free subs--not too shabby huh???

so you know--card is not for sale--I am thinking it has room to grow.. MVP--MVP--MVP !!!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the problem with doing it that way is that you'd be voting yes or no on whatever card was nominated, not yes or no, let's add Kershaw, then let's vote on which card to use.

I think the 85 McGwire was part of the 85 topps set.

I believe the Kershaw 2005 usa was a subset by itself.

    Not 100% sure though

I would like the answer to this question also.
Collecting PSA... FB,BK,HK,and BB HOF RC sets
    1948-76 Topps FB Sets
FB & BB HOF Player sets

Gayle also told me only 2008 cards are eligible. I would have thought the 06 Bowman Heritage was the leader in the clubhouse. If that's the case, I guess it's Bowman Sterling or Topps U&H
