Storing auction catalogues

TiborTibor Posts: 3,684 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know several forum members collect auction catalogues.
How do you store them for access of the information?
I am starting to add to my small collection of these and
would like some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

A room in your house full of bookshelves a small table, comfy chair, lamp, and a mini fridge!

Sadly, i had to throw mine away because I shared a house with an ex-wife. Now that I threw her (and her things) out, though, I hardly have enough money to spend at auctions so they quit sending me catalogs even though I have loads of space.

9 9 foot tall bookcases; 1 8 foot tall, 9 foot wide, 18" deep glass fronted case for the good stuff and a warehouse. This will get you started. image

Modern catalogs can just be shelved, if you collect the really old stuff you might consider sleeves and backing boards like the ones people use for comics (only bigger).

  • If we are talking about older sales, I use the comic book storage stuff. There are different sizes and you can either go the board & bag route and store them in boxes or board and binder sleeve and store them in binders. I use binders as I find it easier to organize.

For the information, I use a spreadsheet to keep track and in that sheet I have a column for what Adams rates it. And Adams = United States Numismatic Literature and he grades every sale (A to C) in quite a few categories.

On bookshelves arranged sometimes horizontally and sometimes vertically, on stacks on the floor, in boxes on the floor, or in a closet, or in a basement, small stacks by the computer. IOW, wherever I can find the space.

Somewhat embarrassingly after recently seeing this esylum photo from David Lange, my B&M sales seem to be in worse shape, and I don't have cats walking on them!

    Deliabug,

What do you mean by binders? Place the catalogs in plastics sleeves and three hole punch the left edge of the sleeve to store? Does this work with thick catalogs like HA?

The sleeves I use are already punched and ready to use in any standard 3 ring binder. I use these things. They make bigger sleeves for the 8.5 x 11 catalogues, they even make special giant ones for Life magazines, but I don't think they are big enough to hold the thickness of some of the Heritage sales. The thickest sale I have put into one is a copy Woodward's Dohrmann Thick Paper sale, and it is only 180 pages.
