ebay: Should I avoid buying cards from a first time seller?

Thank God for this board. I would have made some expensive novice card buying mistakes if it was not for the advice given here.

I am considering purchasing a couple of higher priced cards from a member without any selling history.

This person has bought 9 times and was given positive feedback.

Is there any reason to avoid buying cards from a first time seller?

You're protected by eBay's Buyer Protection, so I never have any concerns. I lower my expectations when purchasing from novice sellers (combined shipping & improper packaging are the typical pitfalls), but if anything goes seriously wrong you can get your money back and you'll usually get a better deal on auctions because many people avoid them.
  • pretty sure,do not quote me,everyone was a first time seller.what larkin said

I'm a first time seller this week, not of anything expensive, but I've been nervous people will avoid my auctions for that reason.
  • I do more business with novice sellers because I think I tend to get better deals from their auctions.

Looks like you're already on par with the recent Braun sales, any more bids is gravy at this point image

not at all. my only advice would be after you win/pay for something, express that the item be packed properly. had a few deals where the 1st time seller didn't pack properly and card was damaged in transit...toploader/card saver, surrounded by cardboard on each side, bubble wrap/bubble mailer. rinse, wash, repeat.

I don't sell on ebay but if you think of it every single seller on ebay started with the first sale.
  • First time sellers usually get very little for their auctions - it's the cost of getting started.
In fact, I've known a couple newbies just give up and sell their stuff locally.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them.
Plus, as a buyer you can't get ripped off like in the old days.

As long as it doesn't have "L@@K" or exclamation points or mention BV in the description it's probably OK. That's probably a good rule regardless of feedback number, though.

The first card I ever sold on eBay was a 1979 OPC Gretzky PSA 9.

Edit to add: The first item I ever sold on eBay was a 1979 OPC Gretzky PSA 9.
