You know what would be a GREAT idea? GOOD, ORIGINAL designs that aren't promotional or depicting parks, states, presidents, their spouses, or other rubbish.
It can be done. It has been done in the past. It's being done today, kind of. See the platinum eagles. What the hell is going on at the US Mint?

If new coins designs created by artists and sculptors with no connection to the Mint or the government were sought out, I wonder what work product would result?
Would designs be inspiring?
What topics/ideals/principles would they cover?
Would liberty make a reappearance? Or would something else take a lead position?
For example how would an artist portray "diversity" on a coin.
If they do it in the "ultra-low relief" that they do everything else in now-a-days, I have a feeling it would look pretty cartoony.
If they go back to the original relief, and use modern manufacturing techniques and equipment to get well struck pieces consistantly....Ok, I might be interested.
As suggested, they should just come up with some "non-political" designs featuring Lady LIBERTY. After all, that's one of the reasons that moderns are dissed so badly. The designs SUCK!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
Not a fan of the US mints reuse of classic designs. They should create new Lady liberty designs. There should plenty of talented artists and Sculptors capable of achieving new designs.
More crap from the mint. I really dislike the idea of re-doing classic designs, and even more so when they are off-metal, different size, different denomination.
If it were up to me we would re-do all our coinage in some rendition of Liberty on the obverse and a fresh eagle on the reverse. All denominations the same design. Then....
1) There would be a law that prohibits changing the designs for 128 years. I say 128 years so there's no ceremonious change at 100, 125, etc.
2) There would be a law that would prohibit making any coinage, commemorative or not, in a design or a denomination that's used for circulation.
But that's just me.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
<< <i>The mint apparently will beat DCarr to re-striking the entire us coin type history.
I wish you had made a poll for this Re: good idea or not.
This reminds me to make a new poll for another something else. >>
Eh, I think the Barbers are safe from design memorial or re-strike from the mint or D Carr. For now. Ya never know.
But anyway, the Mint needs to stop public polling / questionnaires for what to make / do next. Bad optics, makes the mint look leaderless with a WTF should we make next appearance.
Stick with private, non-disclosure focus groups for product opinion.
I always thought that they were beautiful coins. Leave them alone to bask in the glory days of their issue and move on to something more modern and innovative.
Maybe make one and put a liking of Steve Jobs on one side, and and a picture of an Iphone on the other. It could be really cool if it actually works like an Iphone. Just hold it to your ear. Maybe they could make them a collaborative venture with a 3rd party grading service. Interactive working slabs. You can look at them and listen to them. If someone stole it you could use the built in chip to track it down.
and, violla... The next big thing in numismatics, slabs with micro chip anti theft GPS tracking. And you could use it to deplete your bank accounts and max out your credit limits at the next coin show.

I am quite sure anything produced will reflect current political correctness.
