A question about Walter Payton cards.

Hey all,

I was looking to start picking up some Walter Payton cards. I was searching ebay's completed listings and was wondering why some of his cards got the prices they got. His 84 topps card cleared $100 and his 85 Topps cleared $200-$250. Both of these are PSA 9's that I was looking at. I know the 85's can be tough with the black border but, why do these two years go for so much? His 83 and 86 topps go for $15 to $20. Are the 84 and 85 short prints?

Can anyone help me understand why there is such a huge price difference?

Thanks in advance.

I believe it comes down to the low number graded for those years, popular issue years and condition difficulties. Combine that with Payton's popularity and you get a couple of highly sought after PSA 9, PSA 10 cards.

This is easily understood as it correlates to the pop report.
    1982 PSA 9 = 337
    1983 PSA 9 = 516
    1984 PSA 9 = 70
    1985 PSA 9 = 77
    1986 PSA 9 = 383

Believe it or not, even these modern cards can be difficult. Hope this helps.
  • The 84 is always OC and the 85 has a chippy black border. Both are legitimately tough in PSA 9.
