Just curious ... how would you rate the toning on this Morgan?

I am talking about the color only (not the grade or strike). It's an MS64 by the way.

Monster, Great, Just OK, Fair, Poor, "Dont Like"?

    Sort of like a 6.5 on a 10 scale ?

What is most distracting ... the half and half nature ... or the colors themselves?

If the toning is that dark, it's not for me. Image below is a bit smaller. Still a nice coin!

Attractive Obverse Toning. I'd give it a 5-6 on a 10 point scale.

My presumption is this is an 1879-S Morgan, and that the owner would ask a premium of at least 3-4x standard market value for the toning.

I personally prefer Morgans toned on both sides...

    Not a fan.
Too dark to start off with and then very abrupt change in the middle....one I would think of as more suspect than not....regardless of if it is or not.
Just not liking the darkness nor the abruptness in the shift from dark to light (orange-yellow)

I find the toning to be a 6 of 10, that being said The abrupt change at the halfway point makes me wonder how it toned like this. It was stated earlier that some may find it AT because of this. What does the reverse look like rims etc? I would say it is NT

I saw this Sunnywood coin on auction at Legend this evening ... kind of a look-a-like coin to my 1879-S (at bottom)

Amazed at the bidding so far on the Sunnywood coin (nearly $3000) ...

Is some of that the pedigree?

Most people that posted here seem to think that the toning on mine was just OK ... not great.

I see what you are saying. Most would probably say that it's hard to evaluate unless you see both coins in hand, side by side.
It is interesting how similar the colors and progressions are though.

Also, a 1887-O in 64 or higher with nice toning on the obverse is a lot harder to find than a nice obv toned 79-S is.

    I like it.
Not a monster though I would rate it a 6-7 out of ten.
No question from my quarter that it's NT.
I have some that are very similar and know they are bag toned.

I would rate the color as 7 out of 10 -- I love when greens like that show up on a Morgan. Definitely not
"monster" color, though. Better sell it to me quick.image

I think 7/10. I really like the colors and I'm a fan of slightly darker toning than most folks. As to the Sunnywood coin pictured, the 2 crescentic rainbows stacked atop each other is more interesting visually imo.

6/10 to me. One of the reasons is that 79-S rainbow coins are ready available.

As others have said, common date for toning, common toning pattern as opposed to the 87-O, would have presented better with a few more colors in the mix. I like for a 6/10 FWIW.

    WL,

The toning is natural for sure and I would agree with most of the other posters that it is 6-7/10. I see a lot of dings on the obverse and don't particularily like it as a MS64, but they may look less prominent in hand.

But the coin is definitely a keeper.

Your coin is similar in the general colors but if you look at the sonnywood coin it is more saturated and the colors are smoother looking. The line where the colors progress are in a much better line on the sunnywood coin as yous is a bit more chopped up across the face.
