1968 Topps Nolan Ryan

There is a lot to know about this iconic card. As if it is not enough that there are 4 types (Topps, O-Pee-Chee, Venezuelan, Milton Bradley).

Some of the information does not make sense to me.

Here is what I have read.

1) For the Milton Bradley version I read the following.

<< <i>Topps printed a special batch of cards for the Milton Bradley game pictured below (game came out in 1969). They ended up using a different dye lot on the back (yellow back instead of orange) and when the cards were cut from the sheet they left a border strip of the on one side. >>

This can't be right. Every one of the cards on ebay has a yellow back. I am pretty sure I read somewhere else that the Topps version has an orange border in the back but never have seen it.

2) On an authentic Topps card the print of "1968 Rookie Stars" is more of a red than orange found on counterfeits.
Just about every one I have seen has been orange. Even ones with a grade of PSA 9 seem orange.

What else do I need to know about this card?

From what I have read on here about the Ryan Milton Bradley, only the back is different. You can do a search for previous threads on this card in this forum.
  • the is also usually a white line on either the top or bottom where the football cards laid next to it on the actual sheets. the cut was usually always off so you would get a little border from those cards on the ryan/koosman

  • My advice if you are going after the '68 Ryan is to get a PSA graded example. The type of card will be specified on the flip and you can feel confident that the card wasn't altered in any way. I purchased a '68 Ryan a few months ago in a holder from a different company and it turned out to be trimmed. I missed it on the scan but in hand it was obvious. The ebay description declared the card mint so I had no problem getting my money back.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.
