Is it safer buying from a dealer or someone with a personal collection?

I want to avoid purchasing a counterfeit PSA card.

This thread is not about whether buying a counterfeit PSA card is a legitimate concern.

Would I be more likely to receive a counterfeit PSA card from a dealer or from someone with a personal collection?

Someone can be as honest as they come however that does not mean they could not unknowingly sell a counterfeit PSA card.

  • With the internet, I would think a dealer would be out of business pretty quick if they were selling counterfeit cards - PSA or otherwise.

A personal collector may not know they have a counterfeit.

I would say personal collection. They should be experts on what they collect unlike dealers. I have seen many big dealers & consignors with counterfeits because they just "turn & burn" too fast to notice.

You seem to be really worried about counterfeit cards in PSA's holders.

Whenever I purchase a PSA graded card, no matter who it is from, it's unlikely that it will be a fake.

If I had to answer your question, I would say it's safer to buy from a private collector.

I would suggest to not worry about this and enjoy collecting!

    Don't buy on Craigslist.
    That should prevent most problems.

It all depends on the seller. image

The best way to avoid buying fake PSA cards is to buy non-graded cards. It really depends what you are buying, the fakers tend to focus on high dollar cards.

Completely agree. You pay a premium for the PSA holder to ensure it is a legit card. I understand there are a few examples of fake cards out there but those are few and far between. I have never had an issue with a PSA graded card. BVG on the other hand is a disgrace but we are not allowed to bash other companies on this forum.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.
