What would you pick for a modern auto RC: PSA or BGS

Been doing some searching lately for some rookie auto and patch/auto cards.

Have noticed that there are many more BGS 9.5s available than there are PSA 10s or even PSA 9s.

Since I buy them already graded and don't play the submission game, just wondering why this is?

Is it because BGS also gives an autograph grade, or is there some other reason?

I've also noticed that on a lot of them, the BGS 9.5 sells for more than the PSA 10, although this isn't always true. Again, wondering why?

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I don't remember it if it was. Would like to hear some opinions.

    BGS

    BGS.

  • BGS grades the auto also which is not done with SGC or PSA. A 9.5 card with a 10 auto increases the scarcity of the example.

    I would stick with BGS for refractor auto cards. PSA for everything else.

    Great question. i was noticing that the 2001 Miguel Cabrera Bowman cards were nearly all BGS, no auto involved. I am wondering about some of the same things you are.

    I have been wondering as well, both with regards to auto and non-auto, for modern FB. Thanks to all for the input.

    agree and please keep it coming folks - want to better understand what people think about and look for on the modern autographed RCs

    I'm also chasing a fair bit of these in FB and noticing a TON more in BGS holders than PSA, wondering why that is - I can't imagine it's just the auto grade as there are plenty of 10 auto grades that shouldn't be, which says to me it's sort of irrelevant thing UNLESS it's less than a 10

    Exactly. An auto less than a 10 is unacceptable to the OCD population. Miguel Cabrera is probably my starting point for when to consider BGS. Anything before Cabrera I prefer PSA.

    It all depends on what you would consider to be vintage. Personally, I consider anything beyond the past twenty years.

  • Easy Answer?

    Why are there more BGS'? Thats what the kids collect. Also, its much easier to submit to BGS (no membership needed)

    I am not a "kid". Neither are most collectors who trust BGS for their collection of nonvintage sports cards.

  • If you ask any forum what grading company is best, the general consensus is:

    Modern = BGS
    Vintage = PSA
    Pre-War = SGC

    That could have a little to do with it.

    BGS for modern and PSA for vintage.

    And is this because the perceived card grade accuracy is "better" at each for these items?

    I have to admit, I see plenty of PSA 10s that don't look "GEM MINT" to me, but I haven't seen too many BGS 9.5s that I felt the same way about. I'm obviously excluding BGS 10 Pristine, but mainly because there are so few in the first place.
