Complete Type Set, Complete...Finally

It's been a tough climb up the mountain, at this grade level, but I am done! I have included a number of type coins not recognized by PCGS, but should be. If your interested, PM or e-mail me and I'll be glad to discuss those coins that have been omitted.

I think this will arouse HD to flex his numismatic muscle...he set the pace!

As far as I'm concerned, the 7 year project has been a real education and wherever I end up on the registry will be a footnote.

I will try to photograph most of the key coins, then re-list the set.

  • Completing a set like that is an awesome accomplishment! HD will have to post one of his new coins he was saving for the end of the contest early to jump back on top. Way to go Jim!!!!

  • Amazing!! Seven years is not bad. I'm working on that set, but estimate it will be more like 20 years before I finish.

I will enjoy any images you decide to post.

I think this should get High Desert interested again. The last words I heard from him was that he was underwhelmed with the new type sets. Anyway this is the original, old, mega type set. Do you really think he has an upgrade he hasn't posted?

What next JSwan? Colonial types? Dark side types? A date and mint mark set? Or just a well deserved vacation?

Swan- I thought you started a thread a while back about collectors keeping their sets "dark" When are you going to share your set contents with us? A set like that is too good to keep to yourself.image
  • I am fairly confident that High Desert has some upgrades by now. We will see...

I mentioned that I planned to re-list my set with some photos...that is still my plan.

The set will not be pedigreed. I have a number of coins from much more prominent collections; Eliasberg, Norweb, Garrett, Bass etc...the coins will retain those pedigrees.

    Thanks for your nice comments!

Swan - I applaud your decision to leave the origonal pedegree on your coins. You are leaving a good historic trail for future generations to track. Well done ,you are a true and honorable collector. Regards Bear

Swan, if you include photo's, I would guess that means you will make it visible. Sure would be nice to see what is behind the number on the front page. A true accomplishment.

Excellent effort. I'm on the 20 year plan for this one and am #26 on the list (with a bullet) image

I too would be interested in seeing the specific grading details.

Swan - I'm curious - What was the final coin that closed out the set?

    Way to go, Swan!!

I, too, woud be curious if there's a story about the last coin. My experience is that the last coin to complete a set always includes some funny combination of never seen one or quality of the six looked at was awful or somebody outbid at a ridicuous price and everybody seems to have one but you. As Gilda said.....it's always something! Same with you?

And what's this tie for first!!?? Seven years and you end up exactly at the same place as me?? You must be holding back something! (BTW, you correctly surmise from our PMs that I have a lately come up with some upgrades). Bill suggests that I'm holding off for the end of the contest. Not quite true....just haven't gotten around to posting yet.

This brings to mind a question...are people holding back sets and/or coins for the end of the "contest"? This sounds like an interesting thread...

Anyway, congrats!! A very impressive set!

  • It's good to see High Desert back here...I hope it is not the rule that I have to spend 5 or 6 figures on a coin to prompt HD to post on this forum!

Somebody asked "what was the final coin" . The final coin was the rolled edge $10.00. The rolled edge eagle was my last purchase because they are, in my opinion, too similar to the wire edge, and a very expensive type coin. I would rather spend that kind of money for a high grade 1796 no stars $2.50; but the rolled edge is part of the type set, so I made it my last purchase. I guess it was a matter of priority

Thanks again for the nice comments.
