Is the Mantle worth grading

Just got this. Thinking about grading, but as you can see, the bottom left corner has a missing bit. Does this mean automatic 1/poor like a pinhole?

Most likely but worth slabbing IMO. Maybe 1.5?

    FR 1.5: Fair
In order to achieve a Fair grade, a card must be fully intact. Even though the card may be heavily worn, it cannot achieve this grade if it is missing solid pieces of the card as a result of a major tear, etc.

    PR 1: Poor
A Poor card may be missing one or two small pieces, exhibit major creasing that nearly breaks through all the layers of cardboard or it may contain extreme discoloration or dirtiness throughout that may make it difficult to identify the issue or content of the card on either the front or back.

I would have the card graded regardless of the grade that it may receive.

  • so really, that missing corner means 1 max.

if that's so, if anyone wants to deal with grading, make me a good offer via PM. thanks

    Hey Phillip,

It's a shame that piece is missing. I agree that it will be a "1", but I also think it may get a M/C as well. Part of the baseball at the top on the reverse is missing.

Best of luck with the sale.

I believe they were referring to the original poster asking about it receiving an "automatic" grade of 1.

lot of reprints / fakes of that card..
    would for sure slab it

note: I do not think that is fake btw (if wondering if I was implying that)

Taking a look at the card, it seems pixilated. It stands out to me around the signs in the outfield and along the brim of his hat. Here is an authentic for comparison:

black light it. if it glows under the light, 100% fake.
  • this ain't my first rodeo. it's not a fake.

The location and severity of the missing bit is important in how it impacts the grade of the card. Being at the corner tip and not much worse looking than a rounded corner is a whole lot better than it falling on a side edge of the card away from the corner area. The only thing that looks bad is the different shade of red along the edge of the missing bit. It looks touched up with red ink and that would be an automatic authentic, recolored.
  • was thinking about asking for an A if i do send it in. still on fence.

Phil ... I think that would be your best bet, because, as I mentioned to you prior, it may come back PSA "1MK". GOOD LUCK.

I would grade it as well.

i'm in the minority, i wouldn't bother with the grading

it costs you the same regardless what it comes back, so there's no "upside" potential of a grade

all you're potentially getting is that it's "authentic", and while that's certainly worth something i'm not sure it would change any economics of the card

I was thinking the same thing about the reverse Doug.

    It's miscut.

Nice looking card. I've seen them grade cards with similar corner wear, where it appears kinda like some sort of rodent ate off a piece of the corner, with 3's. I think this one will get a straight PSA 3.
