This item is up for bid on ebay.

The Auction.

The article.

I'm sure the bid of close to 100K isn't ever gonna happen.

What I found interesting was the response of many people in support of a 20 cent tip - the burger joint said the service was good and the tip was not deserved.

  • Maybe he thought the standard tip was $.20, not 20%?

Totally agree, it has to be one of the most ridiculas auctions ever to go along with one of the most ignorant displays of a proffesional Athlete.

What makes this an "ignorant display of a professional athlete"? McCoy has said he got lousy service. When you give lousy service, you get a lousy tip. That's the way it goes.
  • I don't believe a Philly restaurant would give him anything but excellent service. He's famous and it's worth tens or hundreds of thousands to the business if he becomes a regular and is known to frequent there.

They didn't know who he was until he gave them his credit card.

Nobody will pay for this auction. This is the equivalent of us uncovering a resealed box of cards on eBay and running the price up just to mess with the seller.

There are several Philly servers and bartenders that have stepped forward and said McCoy is a great tipper, so it seems to me something definitely isn't kosher with the burger joint story. As an athlete/celebrity I would imagine you almost have to at least tip semi-appropriately to avoid situations like this.

I'm part owner of 2 restaurants and have been in the industry since I was in high school, so I'm speaking with some degree of experience here. Either:
    1) The server complained to the manager/owner about this tip and lied about giving good service. The owner decides to fight for his employee's honor by posting online.
    2) The owner in his heart of hearts knows the service was average or sucked but decides to take advantage of a marketing opportunity.
    3) The customer is a crappy tipper, which we probably would've heard about by now after being a star in the league for 4 years in the facebook/twitter age.
    4) The customer was drunk and messed up the math.

3 and 4 are the least likely scenarios. If it's 1 the correct course of action is for the owner/manager to approach the guest and ask if the service was sub-standard. There are tactful ways to do this, none of which include posting a pic of the receipt online. If it's 2 then the owner is a complete dickbag and the ebay moneygrab attempt is the icing on the cake.

    +1

Servers don't get to decide if they delivered good service or not, the customer does.

McCoy was clearly trying to make a statement about his displeasure with the service, server, or experience as a whole.

The owner deciding to try to shame McCoy, get publicity, and cash in with this auction is totally a dick move.

If I lived in Philly, there is no way I would go to this place after this classless stunt.
