A different way to look at Presidential Dollars *ERROR

I've had this for a while. Pulled it and one other from a box ordered from the mint. Back when you could get them for face.....those were the days. Then everyone started racking up credit card points and returning the coins to the bank and they shut that program down. Or should I say, they still offer the boxes, they just charge $55 for the transaction.

Anyway, it is considered Improperly Annealed.
I think it it looks way better than the "gold" version. I think it has the color of our older coins and medals in that chocolate patina. What do you think? Do you prefer this version over the correct/finished version.

Those are very neat coins. I've had a couple in varying degree's of sintering or "Improperly Annealed" as the common lingo goes.

It is 1 of the things which made ordering the ADAMs and Washington Boxes so rewarding.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I have one very similar in PCGS plastic.

Improperly Annealed / Sintered Planchet errors are very cool as it is an error that "stands out" instantly with no need for a lupe.

These are waaaay under appreciated IMO as it is a very visual error.

I like the look too....and besides the basic color, it has almost a marbled grain depth to the color.

Any chance that this is the future patina that all of the "gold" dollars are headed for in 50 or 100 years? Probably not...unfortunately.

I agree but for the CnClad coins, many folks believe that they are looking at a "DIRTY" coin.
For example, a 1971-D IKE next to a 1978 IKE:

Typically, the surface of these coins appears "mottled" or "splotchy".

Another "presidential dollar" which often can be found with sintering is the 1972 Type 2.

And this one I picked up off of DLRC.

I still have 130 FDI PCGS MS 65s Washingtons $1s from my first submission of a $1k box. Can't rid of them now. Very small window back than when you could make a killing on them than PCGS changed the rules on the FDI submissions.

I ordered so many boxes of presidential dollars (I spent them too) and never found anything. Good to hear someone did!

At the time I was working on a certain jobsite for about six months and frequently shopped at a local convenience store next to the project. The woman behind the counter would act like she hated the coins and would make a big stink about them. After several months I stopped spending them because I ran out, she then admitted she was just doing it to get me to bring more and had kept them all. She saved about $250 worth image.

    That's a good story
  • There seem to be quite a lot of the improperly annealed coins out there, particularly on nickels and dollars, although they're absolutely showing up a lot on other series as well such as the state quarters.
