I recall seeing this in the Doily holder, too, but did not want to write anything about it in the thread. However, since it has already been discussed.... Are you certain it was an AU50 in the Doily? I thought it was also an AU53 then, too.

I never saw the coin in the Doily. But I find it amazing what some dealers will do for profit sometimes.

You do realize only a few board members care about Doily holders? A subset of a subset of the overall collector market. While I personally agree it would be cooler if it were still in the Doily holder, ultimately most of us are coin collectors, not cool plastic holder collectors.

I will have to disagree with you Paul. Most avid collectors are familiar with old holders, specifically doilies. At the end of the day, it is not just plastic, but the history of how things have changed over the years, and in the case of doilies, black holders, regency etc, how they were used for such a short period of time.

    But to each their own.

I agree with that "to each their own". Crack that baby out and let it rest inside a taco bell napkin <enter sarcasm and a wink, fellas)

Here is the coin back in the doily holder.

Its last surviving show was GSNA I believe 2 years ago (maybe 3?)

I personally would never crack out a coin in a doily holder just for any guaranteed upgrades.

Doesn't matter to me. That coin matters to me. Hey Ankur why don't you just water board me? image

If it makes anyone feel any better, before I got rid of most of my US coins I consigned some to one of the major auction houses. One of the Morgans was in a doily holder and the person I was working with swore up and down that it would upgrade if they cracked it out. Guess what, it came back as the same grade...that is if it was the same coin. Pretty weird situation, and one that did not make me very happy. I would say that at least half of my consignments to auction had some sort of major screw-up involved.
