1979 OPC Gretzky rookie wax box on EBAY

Nice legit box

The seller is wonderful, the box is fantastic, but there is really no way of knowing if this box was pieced together from a few boxes after a Gretzky rookie was pulled. That is my only beef with buying unopened when the sequencing can not be determined. I'm sure this has been discussed here more than once, but this is such a nice wax box to get if that one little road block wasn't in the way.

It's a shame when a box is so dependent on just one card. A 1972 baseball wax box has lots of cards to keep the box interesting, as does a 1975 topps baseball box.

I know no one would buy this to open it, but even the person who wanted it could not buy this without wondering if the packs were mixed or original.

Funny. I thought I was the only person that thought of this.

Tony is very legit; caters a lot to super high-end Pre War items. I've known and dealt with him for several years now.

Agreed on the hesitation toward that box; impossible to know.

If someone were to open a legitimate box of this issue, is there a certain sequencing they could expect? I know it's easy to tell if an 86-87 Fleer basketball box is built from various sources. Is 79 OPC similar in that nature?

What makes buying unopened packs more difficult is a 100% ethical seller could unknowingly be selling something that is not authentic.

OPC had some sequencing during the late 70's, but it wasn't as pronounced as other issues. You can't count on the sequences holding for long runs like you can for other issues.

If that's the case I'd be comfortable buying a box like this that was determined by Steve to be full of authentic packs. 48 unopened packs of 79 OPC hockey seems incredibly hard to come by. Group rip? image
