Looking for possible PSA Grades for 3 cards from 1950s.

I am not an expert in any sense of the word when it comes to baseball cards.

I loved every minute of obtaining these cards and their stories and I am left with a beautiful collection of cards that I would not be able to obtain today at the prices we paid some 25 years ago.

I have attached images of 2 1954 cards - 1 Bowman and 1 RC Topps and a 1 1959 RC Topps.

I think they look good and in comparison to some 9s I have seen, I believe they are better. I know that these are pictures of the cards, but to be honest, they look even better in person.

Do I have any chance for the GEM MINT 10 grade?

Its very difficult to tell from the scans just how sharp the corners are. However, I think you have to rule out the 54 Kaline due to left/right centering and the 59 Gibson due to t/b centering. The Mantle appears to be the best centered, but even that one may fall just short with respect to centering. Either way, the 3 cards are beauties and should definitely be graded. good luck, Tom

  • I appreciate your opinions. It is nice to get others opinions, as I need to be prepared for I am not disappointed.

I was basing my cards on those of Dmitri Young's collection of GEM MINT 10s. If you look at his, the Kaline it is virtually identical in centering left to right and the corners on my look as sharp if not sharper. I could be wrong though. His Gibson was a little off centered, but not as much as mine.

How much would the Mantle be worth at auction if awarded a 10 grading?

First off, you have some very nice cards. From the scans I would think you would get a PSA 7 on Gibson, 7.5 Kaline and an 8 on the Mantle. I would need to see the cards in hand in order to confirm the grades.
    Thanks for sharing.

  • ThoseBackPages,

Would you mind taking a look at my previous post "what does ANYONE or EVERYONE" to take a look at a few more cards. I would very much like your opinion, as you have an incredible collection and I value your opinion.
  • Thank you for throwing some numbers out there and bringing me back to reality.
  • Also,

When submitting to PSA, what level of service should I pay for? Does it have any affect on the grade that will be awarded?

Just for a further dose of reality, there have been almost 2300 - 1954 Bowman Mantle's graded and only 10 have even received a grade of 9, with 0 attaining a 10. The last 9 sold for over $57,000.
  • If they have been in those brick screwdowns for any significant period of time the corners may be smashed down in which case the cards could be 5s at best or possibly not slabbed at all. They also might be stuck to the holder on the glossy side of the card which would lead to paper loss when separating. You might want to get them out of those holders asap.

  • Thanks for the advice. They have been in the screw down holders for over 25 years but not screwed down very tightly. They have been covered in a temperature controlled environment and away from moisture or sunlight.

I have compared the Mantle - just by images online and I think my looks very similar to a few 9s I have seen. However, the doses of reality are probably more accurate than what my eye sees.

Like Lee stated, that is what I told you when you put these cards up on another post and asked about their condition. And has also be stated here and in the other post, you really need to scan the cards, both sides, for us to give you a better opinion. GOOD LUCK.
    STAY HEALTHY!

  • i agree with everyone else. its impossible to grade a card with even perfect scans.

    Here's what i would do if i were you…

immediately remove them from those archaic holders, putting them into Card Saver I's

    Fill out the PSA forms

package them up very well in a cardboard box.

Overnight them to PSA, requiring all sorts of signatures and insurance. There is no cost too great when it comes to high end cards.

Post pics when they return from PSA

  • I just checked all the cards that are in the screw down holders - there were no issues as every card is free of any sticking.

Do you all advise I have them graded myself or just let the auction house take them over to PSA? If so, what level of service should I get?

Thanks for all the advice. I will share one way or the other depending on how I choose to proceed.

I would submit the cards myself. The cards each appear to be worthy of a grade of PSA MINT 9. The screwdown holders may have caused some minor surface damage over the years. The slightest imperfection can drop the grade down to a PSA NM 7. Good luck. Please keep us posted.

  • Thanks.

I am still not sure of the level of PSA service I should request. It seems to be value related, I guess I'll send them over with the 2 day business service.

If they request more money that will be a good thing and I'll happily pay it.

    VMIALUM,
Do you not have a scanner? Your pictures look nice but honestly without better images people are simply guessing as to grades.
Best of luck with your submission.

  • Where the cards are, I unfortunately do not have access to a scanner.

    Thanks
  • It's irrel at this point. We want scans because we just kinda want to know what you've got - from the looks of it, it could be the motherload. But, maybe not.

The only way to know is to get them to PSA. The boards could tell you you've got a bunch of NM-MT cards, but even with scans it's not the same as an in-hand inspection for minor creases, wrinkles, or other surface issues.

Just be sure to post results when you get them from PSA; we're all rooting for you!
  • I understand. Getting scans at this point is not possible. I'll try and scan them prior to sending them off to PSA.

I am hoping that I do have the motherload, as these cards make up just a snippet of what our collection includes. If they grade out well at PSA, the rest of the collection will do the same, as they are as good if not better.

I really appreciate all the advice.
  • Great looking cards! Best of luck!!
