Green is not a good color to get if you are testing sterling or pure silver. That would indicate a higher copper content. Stuff just marked MEXICO comes to mind.
Get an acid test kit and use the one marked 18K to test sterling. Good stuff will turn a milky white.

I had one of those test kits. My wife caught me scratching her jewelry, (Making sure I got what I paid for!) she took it away I haven't seen it since.
