what is this Gold coin worth considering its condition?

YQQYQQ Posts: 3,340 ✭✭✭✭✭
this coin is another from the same purchase.
I hate holes......
apparently some "better to do" folks way back then and there drilled their valuable coins and hang them on their belt.. or something like that..

so I have it in this condition/.

any guesses a to Value?
anything better than melt?

thanks for your input

    Certainly an interesting coin.

Looks like a one escudo 1817 Santiago Mint, Assayer FJ.
The coin says Ferdinand VII but the bust is of Charles IV.
And there's an overdate of the '1' in 1817.

I guess you can nail it to a ship's mast.

    thank you Willie,

I found one sold at HA a few years back. it sold at over 4K and has the O/D.
    it is
    Chile, Ferdinand VII of Spain.
there are some with and without O/D as I have seen in pictures. But I have not info.
but the big question is the hole: by what percentage does it affect the value?

would you just simply attribute it to : Melt?

YQQ--I am no expert, but to me it is a melt coin.

If it were offered to me at melt, Id be a buyer.

I would try it on eBay at Melt+15% as opening bid.

The hole does detract from the coin's sale value, and it is big enough to affect the coin's gold content.
If I may, what is the weight of the coin?

From CoinQuest: Spanish 1 escudo, 19 mm diameter, 0.0951 ounces gold
Gold price today (ApMex, September 10, 2014): $1248/oz
    Coin gold value $119

But the history of this item is priceless, Chile, early United States, pirates, treasure.

The escudo is neat as a conversation piece. But it's not enough gold to be bullion. And it's easy to let too many conversation pieces clutter up a collection.

I'd pay melt plus a few bucks for it to keep it out of the crucible and then a week later I'd realize it doesn't fit anywhere in my collection. So it would just sit there in the clutter section of my stash.

The other pieces are just too far gone to be interesting. Drilled, ex-jewelry w/solder, holed. And the hole placement isn't even very good. You know a damaged coin is too far gone when you don't even like where they put the hole. I probably wouldn't buy them at melt, and I'm not sure I'd buy them at a discount to melt.
