Got this excuse from an ebay buyer

I have to say that I don't have too many in the wrestling card world not come through until this.............$40 Sting test card from 1987.

Hello,

I just realized that my son bid on this card in error. I want to apologize and ask if you would be willing to cancel this purchase. He can not afford to buy such an expensive card.

Thank you for your time,
Mike

    That sucks :/

I get maybe two of those a year. I always want to reply with something snarky, but I just let it go.

Wow! I've heard that "son" excuse before on other threads. Thanks for the heads up, I have him/her on my blocked bidders list now.

I would let it go too.

By just letting it go, don't you still get hit with the eBay fees?
  • Sucks, but nothing you can do other than publicly shame them by posting their ID, then block.

Nope. Open a eBay case. You'll be refunded the fees and they'll get a meaningless non-paying bidder strike.

Keep the fees then. It would be similar to a restocking fee.

Maybe it's her 22-year old son who graduated college, can't get a job and still lives with the parents image

For what reason would you eat the fee?

I wouldn't do that, no matter how small the fee was.

I always let it go-not worth the hassle.

Does "letting it go" mean you're going to do nothing, or does it mean that you're going to file a NPB but not respond to the bidder's message?
  • Whenever this happens, a NPD is very appropriate. Why should you pay the fees because his "son" made a mistake?

It's total bs...please. Happened to me and got them to admit it. Regardless, nothing you can do.

Letting it go means resisting the sometimes self gratifying but ultimately futile eBay war of messages, chalking it up to the sometimes annoying cost of doing business, filing a NPD, and relisting the item.
  • Mutual cancel transaction is the way to go. You don't have many options as an ebay seller and while he may not follow through on this purchase his "son" may end up buying from you (and paying) in the future.

OK, cool. image Yeah, I don't bother responding to bidders that don't pay either. I just file the NPB and move on.

I was under the impression that his son already paid and he wanted the payment refunded. My suggestion was to keep the fees and refund the remainder of the payment. I misunderstood.

Yeah that's what I do myself. I guess when I read "let it go", I really was thinking let it go and do nothing.

How much are the eBay fees?

I use the unpaid item assistant. It automatically opens cases after 4 days and refunds fees to your account 4 days later. It is all automated and nothing else needs to be done. No need to communicate any further with the other party. Nothing can be gained from it aside from a rise in blood pressure.

    Hi Mike,

I completely understand and I'd be happy to cancel this transaction for you. Kids need to learn that money does not always come so easily and using good judgment is vital. I can only assume that your son is being held responsible for this transgression because the cat was already serving a punishment for setting the ice maker to "Crush" and causing it to spew all night while you slept, and was therefore unavailable to step on your keyboard.
Best of luck and continued good fortune raising children.

    Your pal,

Don't you get your ebay fees back if you send the buyer a cancel transaction request using the purchased by mistake or changed mind category?

    Yes, you do.

I respect those that choose to cancel.

I usually opt to open a case for 2 reasons: (1) buyer's remorse is not a reason to cancel a transaction, so it would be inappropriate to use it for that purpose and (2) non-paying bidder strike might deter them behaving that way in the future.

The benefits are marginal either way.

Open NPB case. If buyer was telling truth about son, will make her learn to hide her ebay password a little more carefully, if buyer was lying, they get the NPB strike. Either way, you get your fees back, buyer gets a small mark on their account which wont matter unless its a habit
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
