Raw Pickups Thread

So lately I've been loving buying raw (in person) and then grading later for uniformity and protection-- saves a bundle. Found these babies at my local shop. The '65 Mick is centered better than so many hundreds and hundreds of copies of the card that I've seen, the creases notwithstanding. The Young looks like a 6 on front, spot of paper loss on back-- and measures up right to boot. Might wind up as one of the nicest 1 or 1.5 Young Portrait arounds, LOL. (Apologies if there's already a Raw Pickup Thread but haven't seen one in a while).

Hank unplugged. picked up a couple months ago. got a itsy-bitsy spider wrinkle on the back upper right corner, so he won't be getting high-5'd @ the beach. good enough for me in a CS. image

That's a beautiful card with sick centering. Love the "unplugged" designation for raw, too. Would be awesome to have that in any collection. The 59s have really grown on me in the last year. The card design is really inspired, with all lower case names at an angle like that.

a high grade example of the card would set me way back......but i gotta have 'em for the collection. this is where i can appreciate the applied theory of "less is more". image

A guy said this across the street at Net54, and I thought it was dead on. The thread was comparing a 2.5 against a 4 Red Heart Mantle...

"I would ask to have a second batch of pictures taken of the 2.5, but from what I can see, it's the superior card of the two.

Remember, these guys are looking at the card under magnification in the dark. There may be some flaws that are more readily apparent in optimum conditions. If they don't show up when you've got the card in your living room's display case, then who cares? I'd jump all over that every day, and twice on Sunday. Perfect opportunity to own a beautiful example of this card at a fraction of the cost. Those are the kinds of cards many of us around here love, myself included."

Great outlook and spot on. I have two hurdles to clear to comply with your words of wisdom. First, my eyes are not as well trained as yours to spot out the "hidden gems", especially when viewing them on computer scan. Secondly, I have to get over being a PSA snob and ignore the number on the slab and focus more on the card itself.

I used to go the PSA and SGC route however after a few years of it I am going back to the raw route so I can enjoy looking at the cards.
I have gone back to my roots of collecting the way it was meant to be.
Not to piss anyone off but is buying boxes at ungodly prices really a thrill.Prices for boxes and cases have gone out reach for most collectors.
I still own graded cards and sets however I buy raw then send for grading.I would rather pay $700 for a 59 topps mantle than pay 700 for a box of late
70s or early 80 boxes and end up with $20 worth of cards.

Well this is only my opinion OLD SCHOOL I say collect what turns you on.

I got over the latter hurdle a few years ago when I began to notice the occasional card that looked superior to a card I owned in a higher grade. Each time I encountered such a card, it gave me this dawning sense of dread, like I was a sucker in paying more when I could have had the better looking card for less. Owning a card in Grade X when there was a better looking one for cheaper in Grade X-Y downright chagrined me.

Haven't thought much on that one yet. It's gonna be a 3 I think. Maybe a 3.5 if the rare centering carries it.

Just sent these two football cards in for grading. I was sold on the centering and I think I negotiated a very good price on my part. They both have very clean backs. I am hoping they both come back at least PSA 5. Regardless of the grade they both look great to me. DM23HOF thanks for starting this thread. This is my first venture of buying raw and submitting. We will see how good of an eye I have when the grade comes back.

  • I normally buy graded but saw these two beauties at a card shop in LA on a recent trip there. There is just something about going through a stack of raw copies of a card and picking out the one that best fits you collecting needs. This guy had about 5 raw 1960 Topps Micks and about 8 1968's. I felt like I was back in the late 80's at Renata Galasso (any brooklyn folks out there that remember this place?). Just something so pure about that experience.

The marked "6" is on the penny sleeve, not the 68 Mick. These two are off to PSA for grading.

I will say this: you are true to your user name!

Amazing cards. The centering on the 68 is sick. The image clarity on that 60 is special.

Combed through like a thousand cards to select these babies-- the Cy Young is in the shot with the other two because of the same set and cool color combos altogether...

The 78 Ryan is a notorious beast and this is the best one I've ever seen. It's my birthday present to self.

Nice cards. I'd guess 7.5 on Reggie and 6.5 on Mick.
  • mattyc_collectionmattyc_collection Posts: 2,129 ✭✭✭✭✭
That's my same exact hope for Reggie: a 7.5 with 8 as gravy.

As for Mick, I hope the centering carries him to 7 but 6.5 would be dope.

I think there's too much PD and missing yellow on the Mick for a 7, so was guessing 6 with a half point bump for the centering. The name circle on Reggie would drive me batty, but beautiful card otherwise.

is nice, huh? a couple corners are soft, but the scanner covers that up real well.

Thx. That registration in the name circle is the trade-off I had to make for the centering. Thought long and hard about it during auction but the centering was too rare for the issue for me to pass up. In hand it's also much less of a problem. One thing I'm learning as I get more raw stuff is that in the age of highly scrutinized scans, a huge blow-up image can definitely exaggerate flaws that in hand are not that egregious. Basically until I can locate the same centering and great name circle this is gonna have to suffice.

ITZ-- that's among the best centered 70 Ryans I've laid eyes upon. Left right is usually slanting big time. Selling?

lol. not at the moment, i'm a chaser and keeper of these little nuggets, just like you.

so the news was/is rather unpleasant.....the past couple weeks plus have been challenging, but at the end of the day (not this one), maybe we'll have a nicer looking kitchen.

in the meantime, i avoided the contractors long enough to secure this. image

DM23HOF, Any grading news on the 69 Jackson Rookie and the Mick? I'm always amazed at your ability to find great cards both raw and graded.
  • mattyc_collectionmattyc_collection Posts: 2,129 ✭✭✭✭✭
    The Reggie came back a 7 and the 64 Mick a 5.

Just copped this rarely centered specimen that has me pumped. It's not as clean print-wise as my PSA 8 but the centering just smacked me right in the jaw!

As to grading it, unless it is time to sell toward a big new purchase, I keep the raw ones raw these days. One of the happy side effects of the very liberating decision to crop out all my holders when enjoying cards online, LOL!

Here is one for my raw set.... was a PSA 3 purchased on the boards, with a big crease to the right of Maris. Dick Towle did some cleanup, and I am very pleased with the result - still an obvious wrinkle, but looks great in the binder.
