1828 1/2 Cent Grade Opinions Please

Hello all,

I saw this coin in a case at an antique shop (the whole dealer case was coins, not just this single coin). It looks really nice and he estimated it at AU58 for $250. It has some nice luster and good red peeking through and it seems to me by looking at my grading books that it might be in the MS range. This is definitely not my series, but it is a really nice coin and would pick it up if worth the money. I don't think the pictures will do it proper justice, but please give me any opinions you might be able to as well as if you thin there is a cleaning on it or if you think our host would give it a details for some reason. The reverse is really clean (free of marks) in the fields and very detailed on the devices. Thanks a bunch!

Wow, that looks great from my side of the fence. And I`d bet it looks much better in hand.
I would even venture to guess it an MS-63 or so.

Hard to tell much from your pics as it's still in the Mylar/cellophane cardboard holder...

However I think you did fine and I like the look of this lil sister which is in the CH AU range.

The reverse does look like it could be UNC... I'd love to see raw pics outside the holder.

Unless that red is mint luster (which it doesn't appear to be), I think the coin was cleaned and re-toned.

You can't get a feel for copper when photographed through this type of holder.

AU details. Possibly cleaned and retoned. You would have to view the coin in hand to make a final decision.

how do I tell with old copper if it was cleaned and retoned? I am thinking about going back to take another look since I haven't bought it yet and possibly offering $200. Any big things to look for to confirm a cleaning or not? I'm not a complete novice, but this isn't my series. I like the coin, but if it were AU details, it might not be worth the money. Thanks again!

Near UNC details, but almost definitely cleaned and retoned. In hand, you would want to see quite a bit of cartwheel luster if there was that much red left on an original coin.

I'm not going to be so quick to jump on the cleaned/retoned band wagon, though it's possible.

Many hundreds of the 13 star 1828 half cent are known in mint state from the "Collins hoard", so seeing an unc with some
original red on this date/variety is not an abnormality.

I thought you already bought the coin.

You'll have to determine if it has luster in hand as the photos shot through the cellophane deadens the surfaces.

  • Hi Guys,

I went back and looked at the coin again to try to take a few more pics and see again what it looks like in hand. Kind of hard to see the cartwheel through the cellophane although there is definitely some luster showing through. Here are a couple more pics. Any new or more definite thoughts on what it might grade? It sounds like they won't budge on the price so it will be $250. Thanks again!!

Still looks uncirculated to me and if cleaned, they did an amazing job of it.
Old copper like that, any copper coin for that matter ,never fairs well from cleanings.

I am not sure if cleaned and re-toned (I think that red color may be off, too red) - in any case I would stay away due to the apparent corrosion spots on the reverse.

From the pics, put me in the cleaned/dipped and re-toned crowd. That color combination/pattern is almost always due to re-toning.

    First inclination..... cleaned.
I stay away from that look.

Looking through other responses and it looks like others may agree..... cleaned at some point.

That year is too easy to find for the right price in a good AU/MS grade to settle for that one.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

It's a nice saleable coin at AU 55 money.Cleaned and retoned? Probably, but not damaging and not harshly. Any dealer will pay $$ to buy it for a price $$ How to tell? It's that dull red and the even brown areas that make up the "look" kinda too even to be true. I just had an 1804 crosslet 4 you could see red on the reverse around the denomination inside the wreath, but no where else. Nice even wear no tooling or other problems and a dealer paid up for the coin as an AU. We both agreed it was retoned the red didn't belong.
.........I like your coin. I prefer my 12 Star Good Luck, Mikeimage
