Regarding the opening of 1980 Topps Baseball packs, why is it that...

...when I open packs I never fail to get a:

#585 Al Hrabosky, #163 Steve Swisher, #694 Jim Rooker, #132 Biff Pocoroba, #418 Roger Freed, #402 Merv Rettenmund, etc... Basically a bunch of no name Guys I get in a small amount of packs I open, and if I were to sub any of these cards would probably get another PSA 10 to add to the countless dozens or so that are already graded. + I already have these cards to begin with.

Regarding the opening of 1980 Topps Baseball packs, why is it that when I open packs I never get a:

#30 Vida Blue, #405 Dwight Evans, #270 Mike Schmidt, #500 Tom Seaver, #700 Rod Carew, #393 Ozzie Smith, #600 Reggie Jackson, #482 Rickey Henderson, & #580 Nolan Ryan, andif I were to ever get any of these cards, the best grade I would receive would be a PSA 9.

Of all the 1980 Topps baseball wax, cello and raks I have busted, I have never pulled an Ozzie, Ryan, Seaver, Jackson, and only 1 single Henderson which graded a PSA 6!

Paul.

Later, Paul.

    +1

This is my favorite set and ripping is just plain bad in my experience. I recently opened a box of squirt cellos and got a Henderson in bad enough shape that I immediately let my 3 year old hold it. Other than that, I have never pulled any of the cards you are missing in the racks, wax, cellos or even the wax tray that I opened. Even more than a decent Henderson, I really just want to pull an centered Ozzie. Corners and edges come as you are.

I've pulled several Hendersons over the years, including one that graded PSA 9, but never a decent Ryan.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

    Me three....lol
In 1980 I was 8 years old and spotted a ad for a vending box in the back of some magazine from Renata Galasso. I begged my Dad to order it for me
and after 6 long weeks went to the mailbox and finally got it. Along with that box I bought countless packs throughout the year and had probably 2 sets complete
except for one freakin card........................ENRIQUE ROMO!!!

I've been busting 1980 product for over 3 years now off and on. Not as much lately since the price hikes, but I still like to rip if I find a pack with a small tear, broken gum or other minor defects. I agree with Paul that there seems to be a mass abundance of certain cards, whereas other cards just don't seem to come up that often.

This does not include the 66 double prints in the set either. For every Mike Schmidt that's in a pack which is a double print, there's 5 gazzilion Steve Yeager's that aren't a double print. Point is, even certain double prints don't seem to be as abundant as non-double prints.

To this day, I have never pulled certain raw cards from packs or racks. The most notable being The Nolan Ryan A.L. All Star card. I pulled the Angels Team card, which received a 9, and his Highlights card with J.R. Richard, but never his own card. I've pulled three Henderson's one was an 8, and 2 7,s. They seem to be extra tough on that card as the 8 I made was virtually flawless both front and back.

All in all though it's been very fun collecting the set, and I look forward to completing it. I've also learned lots building the set, most notably persistance and patience image chipping and fisheyes are abundant with this issue. To build a true high grade set, like any Topps set from back then will take lots of time and patience. In the end though, it will be worth it...

Now does anyone want 1000 1980 Topps Jim Bibby's or Mario Soto's?

Always looking for OPC "tape intact" baseball wax boxes, and 1984 OPC baseball PSA 10's for my set. Please PM or email me if you have any available.
